Heat...

I watered several times today -- early in the front/corner area of the lot, in the small half-round in early afternoon, mostly under shade, and then tonight in front and side yards, after dark. The moment the oscillating wand had made a sweep, the sharp scent of water came to my nose. It was as if a thunderhead was sweeping in.

For those of you battling to save your tomatoes -- a pictorial problem solver section of Texas A & M University.

Looking at this, it appears that my tomato plants have Cucumber Mosaic Virus. The pencil thin leaves, and struggle to hold blooms, is familiar. Since I used bagged soil from a good source, and peat, I wonder if the overgrown plants I bought last spring were already infected. Even the huge pots were new.

On the one hand, I have been watching for aphids, and a)there aren't any b)I can't see them or c)they hide when they hear me coming. On the other hand, if I don't mulch the plant, maybe my compost will be okay. (I have tossed one or two leaves that dropped off into the compost. Unfortunate, that. I hope the heat of a compost pile under black plastic in Texas will kill the virus.) I have two baby Brandywines to plant, but can they survive in Texas? They're heirloom. [livejournal.com profile] 1minnesotagirl's mom tells me that from her eight years down here, she doesn't think tomatoes grow at all! At least when I called the garden shop, everyone was having trouble.

Something is still eating my hibiscus blooms. I want to see a dead deer out here tomorrow am. I'll call for reinforcements, if necessary.

We drove to Tulsa for Conestoga last Thursday night, spending the night in Oklahoma City with [livejournal.com profile] bevhale and MM. W, Bev and I drove to Tulsa the next day, where I discovered that YDP had given me a reading in their room -- I was late, and this let Mel Tatum read for over a half hour, which she did well. I read my Flush Fiction piece, thanked people for coming, and promised that writing was Commencing.

MM arrived that evening in time to vote in the following event!

That night was the 10 year party for Yard Dog Press, and we had a very silly cook-off of Apocalyptic Bubba food with a story explaining the food. There was a price for best recipe and best story. Bev and I both managed to come in Second in both categories. Since We weren't campaigning at all, that was nice. She did Mutsube (Spam sushi) which actually is a popular dish in Hawaii (hence her story of Bubbas stranded on the Big Island) and I did Suedell's Wedding Cake, which was fudge made with Velveeta and was quite popular. Since it was chocolate, I made two pans and took the second to the Meisha Merlin party Saturday night.

Galloped by [livejournal.com profile] marthawells, [livejournal.com profile] shadowhelm, [livejournal.com profile] reudaly, [livejournal.com profile] hoosier_red and [livejournal.com profile] hudson, with meals and swift speech and sitting in on readings, etc. Not enough time spent with any of them, but hope to see some of them at ArmadilloCon next weekend, and hope to do a podcast with [livejournal.com profile] shadowhelm soon.

Saturday there were panels and there were other silly events. Sunday I got to sit in on Suzette Hayden Elgin's Verbal Self-Defense workshop, and later bought one of her books for a friend. I also autographed with her, and tried to simply thank her for her books, which saved my life. All I could remember through a very bad part of my life was Computer Mode as a response -- but I got out with my life and sanity. Her works are recommended. I bought her Ozark Trilogy for myself. Since it's SF, I don't think it will corrupt my own version of alternate history, and I've wanted it for a long time.

It was a great convention -- lots of doing our best to entertain all the fans who came to have a good time. I did not get to say Yo to Misty Lackey and Larry Dixon, whom I've not seen in years, and I missed the falcons this year, which were fascinating my last visit. Otherwise, good con, good food, good friends. Recommended. (But hot -- very hot outside! The hottest wind I've felt in many years.) We dove straight home from Tulsa, and it was long. I started to fall asleep around Ft. Worth, and would have stopped for the night if I'd been alone. We kept the music and conversation up, though, and made it through.

Writer Rie Sheridan stopped for the night, and had her tool box on her pickup stolen. Bah, humbug!

When we got home, I suggested shocking the pool even though we had not been here, due to the continuing heat. W did this, and then hit it again just to be sure. I saw the slightest bit of cloudiness, so checked that night -- it was JUST balanced. But it seemed ever-so-slightly green Tuesday. So I took water in Wednesday. And learned a barrel full from the guy on duty at Self-Chem. I went home and hit the pool with a quart of Muriatic acid per hour for three hours, and then another cup this am. This was followed by something for too much calcium, and then a touch of clarifier. The pool now loves me.

He said it was not necessarily my imagination -- some people are better at distinguishing minor changes in pool water. So I may have become the person who says "Toss in a pint of shock, will you?" The containers are pretty heavy, so I will direct traffic instead of playing in it. Until we get the thing re-plastered, we'll need to keep an eye on it.

I was so tired last night, I nodded off during Daily Show -- and then had trouble sleeping. Tonight, not sleepy at all. This may be a side effect of a new suppliment. I hope not -- otherwise, it's giving me lots of energy!

I'm going to try TaiChi in the pool -- and then try sleep. Bev arrives Saturday night -- we're going to try and get a lot of writing done the next week before ArmadilloCon.

what chems are you using in the pool?

I'm jealous of the good time you had at the convention, and hope we can recapture some of it at ArmadilloCon (maybe WFC?). I'm glad you had a great time ...

... and that you were able to develop x-ray pool vision! :-D

As you may have guessed...

...we get different stories. It's too involved to go into here, but we've been warned not to use Sams/Costco chlorine tabs, because they contain too much stabilizer. One pool guy said fewer tablets, more shock -- Zappit or liquid shock. And ph minus will not screw with the ph as much as muriatic acid, apparently. So today the Warehouse printout suggested a bit more acid (since the descaler made it slightly cloudy) and I nodded as I bought a new cartridge for the hot tub and a new leaf scoop. New scoop was pricey, but can have both mesh basket and plastic rim replaced -- a much better idea. Second sheet warned me not to use Zappit -- which they sell, and an associated pool man recommended.

I took a second bottle to Self Chem.

Self-Chem told me everything was balanced, what did I see? I said, pale green. So -- might as well backwash and clean sand filter first (done) and after swimming tonight, add 2 galleons of shock, circulate. Then Back to Blue and circulate overnight.

W gets to brush tomorrow if needed. Pool should look normal by tomorrow night.

Then we give it a maintenance dose of algacide!

Yes -- this is all because of the age of the finish of the pool. My granny can take care of it the first couple years after re-plastering. The Algae maintenance dose will become twice a month, I think. No more algae for the kraken...

Keep your fingers crossed that my brain is working well -- if so, I plan to have a small party during WFC. We'll see if I have any energy then.
