To dye or not to dye?

Actually,

I was looking for color swatches of hair, like on the boxes. It helps me construct characters. While thrashing around on a bad Google day, I found this article:

Very interesting -- the writer is a professional who is great with color, and has a list of warnings for self-application -- as in, mondo caution and a friend as maniacal about getting it right as yourself.

I really don't want to do this, but between silver hairs finally starting to show up, the LBb arthritis and the weight gain from the drugs, if I 'm going to look young enough for a job, hair touch-up is in my future.

Of course, I have someone wonderful here in town who does great color -- but we're talking $$$ for all that skill. Wish I had the $$$ for his work. I am paying him to do make-up for me for passport and driver's license photos. I look half-dead when I'm trying to look good. Not a chance I can wander in off the street and get a good snapshot.

I believe that you can go to the Clairol web site and upload a picture of yourself (at the "Try It On" Studio), and then you can change the color of your hair, using the colors of their various dyes, so you can see what you would look like with various colors.

That is a wonderful article! Thanks for sharing! I am very blessed to have a great hairdresser whom I have been seeing for over 15 years. He knows my hair and he knows me, too, so he can caution me if I ask for something that might not work. That is invaluable!!!!

You know my nifty silver streak in the front? That's where I don't dye my hair! If you just have some silver peeking out here and there, you won't need nearly the work that mine does.

And as far as I'm concerned, this is one place where the tradeoff (money vs. doing it myself) is SO worth it. My hairdresser charges $80 for a dye job and cut, and I need a touch-up about once every 2 months. You could probably go 3 once the initial full-length silver is covered. If I tried to do it in the shower, it would cost far more than $80 worth of aggravation and mess!

The gal who styles my hair is pretty reasonable in her prices. She often takes clients that have had their hair color messed up by other stylists (they send them to her). So she has made a rather lucrative career doing color work. You might try giving her a call. Dana (pronounced Dan-a) 918-1200

I thought it might be useful/interesting to others. My guy who is outstanding played with my hair when I was so sick I just couldn't look normal, even for a brunette. He says I can do any color except black -- it's the shade that makes the difference.

I can't even go to him for regular trims -- he's $60 an hour, worth every penny, but right now cash flow is not in a happy place.

I'll keep her in mind. I like the inexpensive cutter I go to right now -- she is awesome for cuts and hair health -- but the only examples of color I've seen her do, I didn't like. Now -- to be fair, she may have warned the person/s that they might not like the results. Or that their hair had been so overprocessed anything could happen. Some stylists will give someone what they want, even if it looks bad. Other stylists refuse, because they're blamed for the nutty cut/color.
