**Sigh**

Does anyone else ever agonize about hotel reservations? I hate to do this, and now I have to go every six months to San Francisco, and make sure that come H#$% or high water, I make the appointment. But San Francisco is expensive like you would not believe. I've gone twice, and for some reason the price of rooms is up -- Hilton has doubled for the O'Farrell location. It's enough to tempt me to go only two days -- but I can't get a Saturday overnight if I short myself, thus effecting the package price.

I've checked Priceline and Cheap Tickets -- Both hotels I'm considering have a couple of "Hotel from H#$%" experiences, despite being 4 star. I did Hilton before, but even as a package it's $800 a person this time. So, Hyatt and the former Marriott (Parc 55) are getting the hard eyeball. Doctor is on Sutter.

Actually stayed two days in South San Francisco last time, at a great Hilton Garden Inn, then dumped the car and spent one night downtown -- double the price, of course. Even the Garden in is up 50%. Is there something big in San Francisco the weekend of the 18th of October?

I LUV the Ansonia Hotel! It's a dive, well, they call it a residence club. But it's cheap, and it's 3 blocks from Union Square. It's where my mom stays! I'm told it's newly remodeled, dang it. I loved it the way it was. But it's still cheap! Free Internet! $800 gets you a month! $50 gets you a single room and a private bath. $60 gets you a window. (You wanna go really cheap, $29 gets you a roommate, a shared bath, no window, but includes breakfast -- which I know you can't eat.).

You may want to look outside of San Francisco, but on the BART line so you can get into the city easily without renting a car. There are hotels in Emeryville and near the SFO airport you might want to consider.

I'm betting on the Big Daddy being the Jazz Festival....

What area of town do you need to be in? One of Hubby's best friends (with whom we go to Phoenix every year) has been in the hotel business in SF for almost 20 years. I can ask him where the good deals are - and if he can make any good deals happen! Incandragon has my e-mail address - I can put you and he in touch if need be.

I have a friend who stays in bed-and-breakfasts when in large cities. The ones she stays in are in private homes, frequently apartments. Sorry I didn't inquire as to how she located them, but I do know she's always been pleased. Surely a printed or internet guide? Good luck.

All I care about --

-- is a clean dive! And W will probably want a private bathroom. I'll bounce it off him, and then check on availability.

I wish you could be here for Labor Day! You are missed!

And I am, I fear, spacey (die, lymies, die!) But I can still follow a recipe. If you were coming, I'd make chai tea for us -- with Star Anise!

Thanks --

My having a good day is a critical component of this, of course. But if W is with me, BART could work out well. Thanks for confirming the best suburb to examine for good hotels.

In other words, I'd better call tonight and get a room....

West Union square. The doctor is on Sutter. The Hilton is a perfect location, but I still can't interview for a job, so my savings are bleeding like water.

IncanDragon has made a good suggestion, but if there's that many festivals in town, I probably can't get into her suggestion. I have to ask W (oh, he just popped in. I said, If there are any rooms with private baths left, would that do? He said I don't want to go anyplace I can't have a private bath! so...he is not hearing about this as an adventure.)

Could you ask your friend for a suggestion for your Lyme-impaired internet bud? Or maybe I need to look for a red-eye into SF early in the AM, and then leave late afternoon. I'd hate to do it, but it might be less trouble at this point....
