Learning the ropes....

Well, Max is now a $900+ cat.

He has had every stat drop but one, that damned creatine. The Vet and I discussed it yesterday afternoon, and I suggested letting him go home overnight -- actually sleep, eat out of his own bowls, eat if he felt like it, no weird noises or strange animals -- and she thought it was worth a try. We could continue the IV, but he'd been flushed several times, and the creatine was not dropping. Well, I took home cat, protein to make mushy and shoot into his mouth, if I didn't catch him eating. And an antibiotic every 12 hours just to cover his picking something else up in a fragile state.

He liked coming home, sleeping first on the bed in the master, then in the office in the sun. I tried to keep him where I could watch him, but did not want Merlyn and Maisie to feel neglected. Merlyn has been on a tear, screaming at the squirrels on the roof. They may have snuck inside, little fuzzy rats, which would also help explain Merlyn's determination to reach the critters. He's on top of every bookcase in the house. He did a lot of screaming last night, and tossing himself at the door where Maisie is. (I think of this as his saying "I told you she'd be trouble!")If Max goes first, he's going to be terribly lonely if he doesn't make friends with Maisie. The boys socialize with me daily, but they are almost always together. That's been one of the hard things about the cats fighting -- I write better with a Max or Merlyn on my lap!

We went back today, and they showed me how to do subcutaneous fluids. Easier with two people, so I will give him another notch tomorrow and then take him in Friday a.m. to run another creatine test. I am pretending that we can get him through this, he's done so well with other challenges in life, because I cannot break down when work has to be done. The blasted Mommy syndrome. I am so continuously dehydrated, I wonder if that's where my tears have gone. W is having a very hard time with this -- he wants us to get a second opinion before doing anything drastic. I'm wondering, can a cat go macrobiotic? They are obligate carnivores, so organic meat perhaps? (I am not sure I'm ready to make warm mousie for him, but I'd try....) They have always gotten the best food I knew about, part of why they stay so "young" and healthy.

Thank you for all your words and encouragement. We need all the help we can get.

This new stress added to both our health issues, how this impacts our relationship, work and money questions...I will be glad to see 2008 in the rear view window. I pray we survive it.

Only good news -- Obama/Biden win (you can think of this as "Palin doesn't" 'cus she is NOT Ready for Prime Time.) At least adults are going to be at the helm. And, knock on wood, it would be difficult to be a worse administration than the current one. My fiscal conservative heart foresees national debt for a long time to come.
