This makes me think of Lebanon, TN. I didn't live there, but my cousins did -- or rather, they lived on a farm outside it. So to me it is both very believable and a reminder of why I will NEVER LIVE IN A PLACE LIKE THAT. Reading books set in small towns gives me very much the same feeling; it's a warning flag, not a nostalgia trip.
