Oh, yes --

They are well meant. I believe that many people derive comfort from them -- the huge figure of Christ embracing I believe the city of Rio De Janeiro is a good example.

But the quality of art is open to interpretation, and some of them, well...let's leave it at the majority of them are at least well meant.

I can't help but notice aesthetics. I'm an artist. I can appreciate "corn" (I love Pumpkin Chunkin' -- it's a guilty pleasure.) but if someone asks me to pick out the piece of jewelry in a case I like best? Generally the piece I pick out, simple, unassuming...most expensive thing in the case.

Lucky for me, I don't need to own these things; just seeing them is a pleasure, no matter what it is. But poorly made statuary bothers me. It's the old "the closer something is to a photo, but misses, the worse it looks". It's why anime and manga that is not photo-perfect is more of a pleasure, at least for me.
