Of bookcases and cover copy.... FIRES OF NUALA almost ready to go.

Well --

Crate and Barrel lies -- they carry folding bookcases at their outlet stores, not their regular stores. Nor does Cox Furniture have them, despite their Internet search results. Target has some, but the supports are plastic. I'm planning on loading these puppies, so I may end up with the Container Store versions -- not mission, not even Euro clean, more like pie racks. But strong, metal supports, for only a few dollars more. Will also check the unfinished furniture places. There's a Winsome mission style beech one in natural lacquer that looks pretty good -- I'd need to order them. A bit more, but they have a mantle across the top for a fourth shelf, which is a nice touch. And they're 48" tall, so more book height is possible, and I do have a lot of over-sized books. Big drawback -- they do not come assembled, and need two people to assemble them. Of course, I want a folding bookcase because I am only one person here! But looks nice for the price.

As for cover copy -- getting closer to FIRES OF NUALA as an E-book, but turns out they do want back copy. They just don't put it on the back. So -- I can't use Warner's version, and I'm not sure it was the best angle, anyway -- I want to sell books this time! So -- Nuala readers -- if you were going to do the back copy to get someone to try the book, what elements would you mention?

Wow, an excuse to pull the nuala books off the shelves and read them again. Very excited to hear that Fires of Nuala (and hopefully others) will be re-released as an ebook as I am trying to get my favorite "keepers" in ebook form.

I read anything and everything. It was the science fiction romance element that appealed to me originally then I just got hooked on your writing.

For back cover copy, who is the audience for the book? Romance readers, science fiction readers, both, someone that wants a HEA or HFN or doesn't care? Other than general plot & setting, I personally want to know about the characters before I invest my limited time.

Have you thought about bringing this question to the SFR readers and writers who follow Galaxy Express blog and SFR Brigade blog? Several of the writers have been re-releasing backlist and/or looking for new fans for their series and probably have some thoughts to share.

Thanks for the happy news at the end of a long day at work.

All good questions. My friend who is a wiz at virtual marketing suggests that the books are 50% cultural/political thriller, 25% Hard SF, and 25% Romance. I wouldn't market them as romance since they are novels with romance in them, not "51% of the concentration is ROMANCE."

I think romance readers who like SF would like them, like Anne McCaffrey's readers, maybe Catherine Asaro's readers, or Miller & Lee's readers. In the case of Darame & Sheel, they are HEA, even if they have mayhem and war to get through on their journey. But they're not locked into the Absolute Nuts stage of a new relationship -- at least not on the surface. Sheel IS extremely protective of her, and would move mountains for her. And essentially she conquerors a planet for his peace of mind, so I guess there is the level of intensity romance readers like!

I don't think I've been to Galaxy Express or Brigade, although I joined Good Reads and follow a few super-readers there. What drew you to those sites?

I'll probably toss up the prospective back cover blurb, once it's in Beta, so to speak. Keep watching! And thanks for your enthusiasm -- it's nice to know there are people who remember the books fondly.

Galaxy Express & SFR Brigade

I live nowhere near a bookstore anymore, so I started blog hopping in order to find recommendations for books. I do a lot of lurking with some interactions, all from the reader viewpoint. I've tried to not be as shy as I would like in order to let an author know that her or his books appealed. I'll always regret that I never let Janet Kagan know how much I enjoyed her writing.

I got hooked on Heather Massey's Galaxy Express blog after reading comments she was posting in Linnea Sinclair's yahoo group. She has become a strong voice for SFR, whether it's a little SF or a lot, a little romance or a lot. Actually your name is in her list of science fiction romance authors. She's gotten me hooked on several new & old authors just by looking through her list and posts. She most recently helped promote Lee & Miller's Expanding Universe contest, with the goal to get them "new" readers.

Her blog's web address is

http://www.thegalaxyexpress.net/

Newer on the scene is SFR Brigade. From their site, their goal is "To advance the interests of the Science Fiction Romance (subgenre-niche-specialty genre-whatever) and SFR writers everywhere. Details: SFR Brigade is a networking site that includes a trio of contests, a blog and social forum for SFR writers who are participating in contests and/or intend on seeking publication of their work. Purpose: To have fun, network with like-minded writers, build your name recognition and future reader base, and socialize with other SFR NG ("next generation") writers who love science fiction romance.....I'm not sure I write SFR. What's the definition? Science Fiction Romance, within the context of this blog, is any original work of fiction that contains futuristic or imaginative settings where technology (not magic) and human or alien characters are the focus (not vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters or other traditional fantasy characters)."

their site's web address is

http://sfrbrigade.webs.com/

and their blog address is

http://sfrcontests.blogspot.com/

My job involves more than 40 hours/week so I often don't get to do much at either site except skim blog entries. I've joined a few authors' forums but quickly fell behind in threads I wanted to read as I want to use some of my limited free time to actually read.

Good luck with the re-releases.
