Well, I certainly know which choice I'd be rooting for -- and I doubt it's the way the book turns out. Giving up your dreams for a man is generally a not-smart idea, and a man who wants to chain you isn't a good choice for a mate. And romance books which promote toxic memes are one of the primary ways in which our society spends amazing amounts of time and effort grooming young women to equate emotionally-abusive and skanky behavior with True Love.

And from what I've seen of Lori's biz smarts, I refuse to predict the ending. It may be a HEA but she drags him out into the world and they come back only at holidays, or some such thing.

You are correct, however -- some books don't have the greatest message. As someone who put my dreams on hold for my culture, and in vain, I am a wee big sensitive to it, and try to turn it on its head in my work.
