I include this link here, not because I've seen this film--I didn't think it was one I'd want to pay full price for in the theaters even before seeing this article--but because the criticism has already begun of what Eastwood's "message" has to be. I haven't read anything written by Eastwood about this, nor do I keep up with Hollywood interviews, so this may, indeed, be his message.
But what happened to exploring something to open up a dialog?
I don't want to send this message out myself, but there are times I start writing something knowing someone, somewhere, is going to scream. Can't we talk about all the other possible reasons for these characters to make their decisions, whether we agree or don't agree with them, and so on?
Of course, one of my favorite characters to write about is a tough, compassionate, practical, competent young witch. And if the next publisher succeeds in pushing her to the top of the reading lists, I expect to get a lot of mail...specifically those xeroxed forms from a couple of fundamentalist churches.
