Moving Karma
Well, it's time to go from cryptic comments to full bore plans. I'm moving at the end of the month.
The increase at the apartment I've been in for three years, plus the mandatory cable (that never works correctly) plus the distance to town (AND only one exit out of this huge place that could become a big problem when I have an outside job) means time to move. So, I am moving in with a central friend for four months, finishing a novel, and looking for a good job. The new apartment will involve finding something close to that work, or closer in town.
Am I ready for this? In September I would have said yes. Then there was all the business of my father's declining health, and how that stress and travel impacted me. I'm not as sharp as I was last summer, but I know what is causing some of the problem, and I think I can be that sharp in a month or so. I cannot afford a specialist anymore, which means I lose my meds, too. The mantra here is, I did not die, I have skills of value on the market, and I want my life back. So I'm going after it.
Without the good job, I'll be dropping the health insurance to afford a new apartment (yes, they're about the same price now) and returning to a combination of editing/research jobs, LMT work and whatever I can find while looking for the good job. Benefits will count, of course.
I'm looking to see if anyone has a storage place (air-conditioned, please) that they'd recommend in the 183/Burnett/Ohlen area? Or a place they warn against?
Boxes and packing material. I've lent a lot of my moving boxes and packing material out over the past five years. Are any of you done with them, and can send them back? Do any of you have packing material that you can spare? It won't come back right away, of course -- figure five months minimum, possibly longer if I move in with another friend and no longer have room for everything.
I'll be happy to come get the moving boxes -- delivery is not necessary.
I have offered my oak entertainment center to a friend, and I think he'll take it, but I'll need to borrow a pickup from someone to get it moved. That might be a very valuable donation of time and effort!
One furniture question remains -- should I keep and store my king-sized bed, or get rid of it? A bed is a big investment. If I get rid of it, I will probably try to afford a Queen when I'm ready for a bed again. (Several friends keep reminding me that most American men don't fit well in a double. ;^}) What does the group mind think about this?
I don't plan to ask anyone to try and move furniture. I still have a couple of pieces that take two men to move, and so I'm going to pick a date for the move and let someone professional move furniture. I may also let them move the boxes, but it would be a help if some people have time to help move books. I'm packing up the stuff that has been available in the new U-Haul book boxes, or 2M file boxes. I plan to ask a friend for an appliance dolly to keep from having to move those boxes too far.
Since I'll be moving twice this year, if you can't help this time but are willing to do a morning move at the end of June, that would be extremely helpful and valued.
The window for the move is February 25-29. I'm going to try and get it scheduled for that weekend in the next day or so. Depending on what time of day we try to do this, I am offering to feed people scones and scrambled eggs for breakfast, or something munchible for lunch. Maybe even my killer veggie lasagna. Or if people would prefer an orgy of my fudge brownies (both regular and GF) instead, that could be arranged, too!
So let me know your thoughts, what you can suggest and where you can help. You are valued and appreciated as friends, whether you can assist with this or not. But I am a person who values input before making my choices. And I'm asking for your input.
Edited: Moving boxes, folks. I have a bunch of Amazon book boxes, thanks!
