Looking for cost-effective solutions....

I need to get started on a work site, for my editing business, and also consider new places to put a web site, because I don't think my current ISP is set up for WordPress. I'm thinking WordPress for the next site.

Suggestions? Opinions? I need to move as quickly as possible, but $25/month is beyond me right now.

I remember Scalzi talking positively about the American version of my Internet Service Provider in Germany http://www.1and1.com/ - I think he still has his website with them, only Whatever, the blog, is hosted by the VIP Hosting at Wordpress.com itself.

Depending how big you want to go, you could just get a free wordpress blog at subdomain.wordpress.com and buy a domain name...

My own sites are hosted by a good hoster who only offers information in German, so I can't help you there.

I chose BlueHost, which had the capacity to host WordPress.org when my ISP didn't (unless I coughed up more per month). I am happy about the "special" monthly rate. What surprised me was that they charged me the entire amount (two or three years!) up front. I felt quite stupid, although I really thought I'd read all the fine print.
