So, I am copy editing along in Night Calls, and I reach where Allie is binding stooks...and the actual novel was edited to say "binding shocks of corn" which is almost the same thing. But not quite--a stook has a different meaning in the US and in the UK, and sheave is closer to the old meaning of the word "stook." "Shocks of corn" also works and should convey meaning to multiple groups of people.

I was lucky in my original Night Calls copy editor, even if we occasionally disagree.

Stook would make FAR more sense. it sounds like a foreign/old term, where "shock" was just sort of odd, didn't make me think it was quite the right term. go for stook!
