Well, Serenity is here....

...and I'd say that if you like intelligent SF, you should see this movie.


It delivers just about everything I'd want in a good flick, including the required "take no prisoners, pull no punches" writing style I aspire to myself. Yes, if you liked Firefly, be prepared--we take losses. I'm sad to see them go. Of course, in some shows, people come back. These people aren't coming back--Josh doesn't do that, as Joe didn't on B5. However, I could see him using the characters again in dream sequences or hallucinations as various people deal or don't deal with grief.

How well does it work for people who don't know the series? I don't know--I'd seen at least four hours of Firefly, and had some stake in the characters. I do not know if the loss of at least the first person would have meant as much to a new viewer.

Still--the storytelling is heads and shoulders above most recent SF movies, and you know who you are... The CGI is decent--this didn't have the budget for perfect CGI, but it didn't distract me from the story.

And--we finally know why River went psycho, and we finally know where the Reavers came from.

Uh-uh. Gotta go see it....

We saw it tonight, and I figure Joss can pull a 6 Feet Under and have one or both of the characters show up as another character's conscience. Then again, there's always Spike...

As the conscience of Serenity would be good. I had class during year two of Buffy, and never went back to watching it. Did she stake him, and he came back?

Spike dies heroically in the last episode of BUFFY, and comes back to life (though some mystical means) in the last season of ANGEL. And Joss said that as the writer, he should be able to come up with SOMETHING to bring them back -- the only idea that will NOT be used is either of them coming back as a twin brother.
