Ah, fall....

Ducked into Whole Foods for a couple of things, and completely forgot one of them. You see, this year the store has joined Central Market in the "We can get unusual, heritage, or new to the area apples, too!" competition.

Haralson, Pinova, HoneyCrisp, MacIntosh, Granny Smith (new harvest), HoneyGold (for a cooking experiment), Zestar, Pink Lady, Pippin, Ambrosia....

No Ida Reds yet, few heritage. Must keep walking past the cider, it will spike the system...

Can you tell I miss going to the orchard and buying a mess of apples?

Apples are one of my favorite things come autumn. I keep looking at this strange hybrid thing in the grocery store, however. Grapples. (Pronounced grape-ples)

They look like apples, but they smell like grape kool-aid. I just stare at them and scratch my head. I've not yet decided I want to actually try them.

I know these evil things. To my ultra-sense of smell, they are worse than grape Nehi. And they taste extra sweet, like raisins (got a store sample once). Uggh. I couldn't detect any apple taste at all. But then we must admit my sense of taste is also slightly askew....

Love Whole Foods or, as someone at work referred to it, "Whole Paycheck." :)

Thank you for the food advice. My Mom was really interested in the magazine. I think I found a Christmas present...

I'm sorry I didn't answer earlier. We've been dealing with our cat the last few days. We had to put him to sleep Wednesday.

Very true. I only buy certain things there, like nut butter and goat yogurt (they loss leader nut butter!)

Great! There are cookbooks, too, although I find I prefer to give up a lot of the junk I used to get (like donuts, muffins, stupid breakfast food, and other things of the long past) and substitute great fruit/veggies, lovely oils and vinegars, whole grain McCann's oatmeal, and really decadent desserts in small, intense amounts... Like a cheesecake to die for. But your Mom has different problems, and will need to find a different path.

Ah. sympathies. I went through that last year. Very hard.
