Yes, Cowboys Are Secretly, Frequently, Fond of Each Other

When I first heard this, I thought it was a joke. But it's really Willie Nelson, and the song is available at iTunes. Apparently a friend (a cowboy) admitted this to Willie, and he recorded the song in honor of his friend.

actually, the song was written by someone else, Willie just recorded it. Or so I'm told.

That's correct--a west Texas songwriter wrote it back in around 1981, and Willie had the demo buried in a closet somewhere. Clearly, he thought the time had come that a good ol' boy could record it without people burning him in effigy.

It won't show up on an album, tho...

I just downloaded this last night. It's a great song. And Willie is perfect to sing it. One of the comments in iTunes (which may or may not be true) indicated that Willie's manager of 30 years had recently come out to him, which was why he decided to record it. Go Willie!

Is my memory playing tricks or is Ned Sublette Constance Ash's SO?

Hummm...I think Ned is right--don't know if this is the same Ned.

I supposed it's possible Willie had a gay cowboy friend, but the song was written about 20 years ago by musician and musical historian, Ned Sublette. Sublette wrote it hearing it as sung by Willie Nelson, so he's quite pleased to finally have that come to pass.

More info can be found at [livejournal.com profile] al_zorra. Look for the 2/14 press release.

Yes, I know Ned wrote it--in 1981 was what they announced on a local station--and it may be the station said "gay friend who was a cowboy" and meant simply that he had a gay friend who recently came out of the closet to him.

It does sound like it needed Willie to give it life!
