Quotes of the Day:

"Treat them with humanity, and let them have no reason to complain of our Copying the brutal example of the British Army in their Treatment of our unfortunate brethren."

-- George Washington, commander-in-chief of the Revolutionary Army, after the Battle of Trenton

And we are warned by a conservative -- now is NOT the time to penalize the idiots in the Democratic party. Now is the time to throw out the people threatening our liberty.

"The only response is for the public to send a message this fall. In congressional races, your decision should always take into account the quality of the individual candidates. But this November, the stakes are higher. If this Republican party maintains control of all branches of government, the danger to individual liberty is extremely grave. Put aside all your concerns about the Democratic leadership. What matters now is that this juggernaut against individual liberty and constitutional rights be stopped. The court has failed to stop it; the legislature has failed to stop it; only the voters can stop it now. If they don't, they will at least have been warned."

Just FYI: columnist Andrew Sullivan is not a conservative.

He screams loudly at every turn that he's a fiscal conservative and a social liberal. He was and to a certain extent is hawkish, but now believes the current administration can't deal with the mess they've made in Iraq. He reluctantly voted for Kerry in 2004.

A neo-con conservative, no, but an old-fashioned conservative? Possibly. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. He's one of the people I read to see how the "bridge" people are dealing with things.

Now, Shrillblog is just to laugh cynically....

Kath, if I said I was a liberal, but publically supported Bush in 2004... I don't think many folks would believe that I was a liberal.

To be honest, I don't give Sullivan the benefit of the doubt. I think he's is a bit of a hack, pretending to be something he isn't so that there's some sense of controversy about his political writing.

So your vote is, he's nowhere near where Steve, say, would draw the line? Of course he's not a log cabin republican, either. I take it you're not happy with Lieberman. (He's out of the building, as far as I'm concerned.)

Do you often wonder about gays/l who remain Catholics, and/or Republicans? That's the thing about Sullivan that is interesting. I don't know much of his history, other than he became HIV pos late, after so many had died, and deals with it now. He just seemed to be someone that both conservatives and liberal bloggers linked to. I like to read across the spectrum, as long as my blood pressure doesn't get too high.

My only mantra this year is to vote against all incumbents except Mark Strama, my state rep. He's trying to accomplish something, and he works hard to make both camps happy by building bridges in the middle.

I have to make up my mind about the governor's race, and write it down -- there are good days and bad days. Last night was bad -- took 30 minutes to be able to focus on alphabetizing something. Today is better...

I don't think either major political party tolerates much in the way of dissent from the platform. Pro-war Lieberman certainly wasn't tolerated. It'll be interesting to see if pro-choice Guiliani succeeds that breaking through that kind of barrier on the Republican side.

About Lieberman: I'm ambivalent. Part of me thinks he should just retire, since his party has left him behind. I haven't decided whether he's an opportunist or really believes in what he's doing. (I have plenty of objections to him on how he's used video game ratings as a political lever several times, but on this, I'm unsure.) Sullivan, on the other hand, may have started out as a legitimate Log Cabin Republican, but now he's pretty much just an opportunist seeking controversy to boost his readership.

Time will tell on all of it. But I still have a democract I don't know a lot about, Carole Keeton Rylander, and Kinky Freeman to choose from for the governor race.

And yes, I fear Perry will win again because of the moderate vote splitting. Why do you ask? ;^)
