Courage Beyond Measure
May. 31st, 2011 01:02 pmHave you heard of Irena Sendler? This quiet Polish woman is called the "female Schindler" because she managed to smuggle 2,500 Jewish babies and toddlers out of the Warsaw Ghetto. They were being confined waiting for certain death, but with the help of a network of people, Irena managed to save thousands. Her greatest regret in life was that she failed to save more.
What gives a person this much courage? I'm sorry she did not tell more of her story, because I would have wanted her story to spread like ripples in a pond. Was she always terrified? Did she bury emotion somewhere deep because she knew what was going to happen to her neighbors, and this was all she could do?
To have only a fraction of the courage of Irena Sendler would be a remarkable gift.
