This is actually a good idea for an isolated genetic group. Several engineers created an app tied to the ‘Íslendingabók‘ database to solve the problem.

On Nuala during Sheel and Darame's time, they actually have something similar. The Atares do not forbid marriage between two fertiles related within a certain number of degrees, but they DO limit how many children that couple can have between themselves.

Regular Nualans can have group marriages and give that child as many half-siblings as they can.

Three engineers made an app for the ‘Íslendingabók‘ database. People can now easily, and on the go, look up how they are related to other Icelanders. And a precious feature, using the bump technology, allows people that meet to just bump their phones together, to instantly see if they are too related to take things any further. The engineers’ slogan for this feature was: “Bump the app before you bump in bed”.

"Why were you creeping around the windows?" Again, that gentle speech pattern, which always meant Sheel was fighting anger.

Crow actually rolled his eyes. "Because I did not want anyone to see me sneaking around the temple grounds, of course. I did not intend for the entire guaard and local enforcers to find the place. Mailan wanted it kept quiet."

"Then why did you come?" There was no way for Mailan to warn Crow that his life depended on the answer to her question. Why Sheel was acting this way was unimportant. To those who knew him, he was on the edge of violence.

Ah, the problems of writing about the young and naive. This reviewer got it and loved the book, too! Check out Shiny Book Review for in-depth book reviews, including of my SF series!

A sample:

Look. This is a book that you really need to read if you love science fiction, romance, or any blend of the two. It’s complex, engrossing, honest, surprising, intelligent in how it deals with the problems of a completely different world with its own history and nuances, even more intelligent when it deals with the problems unwitting potential immigrants face on Nuala, and contains two realistic and root-worthy romances in the continuing, enduring love between Darame and Sheel, and the newfound romance between Garth and Lucy.

The reviewer gave the entire series a rare "A" rating!

Now is a good time to tell your friends about Nuala!

A beautiful, dangerous world of subtle radiation, its people still human…by most standards.
A place where genetics may determine your present, but skill and luck will determine your future.
A planet where there is enough love…and hate…for everyone.

For those of you not doing Facebook (or Facebook folk on late shift) here's a link.

Writer Deborah J. Ross did an in-depth review of my Nuala series, and also a short interview. You'll find it over on her blogspot.

Happy dance!

So -- I decided that the current incarnation of my covers was too dark. I knew they were tiny dark blobs on the screen when looked at by a Kindle or an iPhone. So, I asked my Photoshop friend to help me come up with something more visible. (There was a brief attempt at looking for a cover artist, but everyone I was interested in had a six week waiting list, and using brand new people trying to break into covers suggested more effort than I was up to right now, explaining what I wanted, what was popular, etc.)

I wanted big, easy-to-see titles, my name shorter and larger, and brighter. Plus the series numbers on the covers. Got that.

Apologies to Facebook people getting this twice -- I couldn't get the blog to take my uploads earlier!

They may go up one at a time -- the problem may be my trying to make an album of them? (NOTE: -- so, maybe a bookmark...)

Is there a word for the concept of Last Child? This is in a enclave on one of the Seven Sisters. Population growth is encouraged, but only to a point -- any child who is the fifth child in a family is "Extra" and does not have the same rights as the others. They can emigrate, join a trading outfit for ten years and return home solvent and as an immigrant, or join the military (when the country is at war, you have a 30% chance of making it back in one piece.)

So -- this concept may or may not be a pejorative, as these are family members. But they don't have the same destiny, and are rarely moved up in pecking order if someone dies, as health care is excellent.

Ack, I have an appt! Later --

Fires of Nuala is still available at 99 cents, to introduce new folk to the series. That price will not remain forever. (For example, if no one over at Barnes and Noble tries it soon, then I will assume that NOOK readers fear that sale books are no good, and raise the price there back up.)

Amazon readers know it's good, but the new algorithm means that the other two cannot be found. My other children need more reviews!

So -- the sale will not last forever. If you've been planning to try it, head on over to Book View Cafe and give it a try! (Why Book View Cafe? No middleman -- a writer gets 95% of the cover price at Book View Cafe.)

And yes, work continues on the new Book View Cafe bookstore. We thought we had it, but turned out there was a slight hitch with the software -- it could not do something we really wanted it to do. So -- need a different shopping cart.

TA-DA!

Announcing, as requested, real, stamped-by-B&N-with-approval NOOK files of the Nuala series! You can follow these links to admire them, "Like" them, or cheer them on from the sidelines. Or add them to your Nook library on-line.

Yes, the DRM-Free Book View Cafe books that work just fine on NOOK still exist and are available at BVC, among other places. But these are for people who want that B&N new ebook smell.

If I was to put the first chapter or two of a Nuala book into a free Book View Cafe SF Sampler, which book do you think I should choose?

This won't happen until January at the earliest, so if you notice this post, make yourself known!

The time has come! If you've wanted to pass along to friends that the Nuala books are a lot of fun, here's the best time to do it. Right now, in honor of the Backlist eBooks (BeB) web site going live, I have my Kindle novels on sale. Fires of Nuala is at the introductory price of .99, and Hidden Fires and Fire Sanctuary are $2.99 each.

Clicking through these links will give a few pennies to BeB, and help us promote over 100 vetted professional writers selling quality eBooks online. My books are also on sale in Pounds Sterling and Euros, just not through the BeB site.

The books will be on sale through the month of October. Spread the news!

Would you like to help? If you've been planning to write up a 4 or 5 star review, and haven't gotten around to it, now's the time. The more the books have, the better it looks to people browsing for new books. I'm going to be tweeting about nice and interesting things people have to say about the books, so you will be tweeted to many should you produce a cool comment. (No names, of course -- I have this privacy thing for my friends and fans. People have to go read the reviews to figure out who said what!)

If you are totally intimidated by reviewing, or can't write less than 1000 words and don't have time, buzz by and click the clickies -- Amazon has "Liked" buttons now for books, as well as "tagging" farther on down the page. I think you need to have an account with them to tag, but I haven't confirmed that.

(And, of course, if you hated the books, but still enjoy reading my blog, I appreciate your NOT reviewing the book! Thank you!)

Oh -- for those of you who like your books DRM-free, I'll have a sale when the new Book View Cafe eBookstore goes live in December. I imagine that other BVC authors will also have sales at that time, so make a mental note to check starting December 1st, our hoped-for launch date.

More money from books means I can continue writing! Life is complicated right now -- my father is very ill -- so your passing along word of this sale however you can is greatly appreciated.

In the meantime, it is NOT 105 degrees outside, and I look forward to a lot of work happening today. Wishing you fun and work well done in equal measure!

A new review showed up at Amazon while I was out of town. So kind, that someone took a moment out of their busy life to do that. If I could get the reviews of the Nuala books up to twenty for each, they'd show up in searches more often.

Can't do anything about it so I'll go post a review at Goodreads. And check to make sure the book is over twenty reviews at Amazon.

Spreading happiness!

I haven't made a pitch in a while, so thought I'd mention ebooks in passing this holiday weekend (in the USA -- everyone should celebrate their independence day! Heck, in Texas we celebrate Mexico's, too.) Ebooks are out there and ready to be read on a moment's notice!

If you are in need of new reading material and your reader is not yet filled, check out my SF novels. You can get them DRM-free over at Book View Cafe, and on Kindle branded software at Amazon.com. (That link is to the BacklistEbooks group, which will show you everything, but you have to click through to be able to buy them.) There are links to my stuff over on the side of the Live Journal, too.

We now return you to your long weekend activities. Don't melt!

The reviews haven't migrated yet -- it looks very naked.

There's always an eleventh hour edit with an e-book! But I sent it off, and I think the book will be available at Book View Cafe Tuesday the 29th! (I have no idea what that will work out to be with the other side of the world, but as soon as the server releases it, we're in business!)

The second book of the Chronicles of Nuala has gone to Kindle -- Hidden Fires and
Fires of Nuala can be found at the Amazon monster store.

And in honor of this event -- SALE! They each are only $3.99 a piece, a steal for such fine science fiction novels.

We now return you to your browsing....

It's Episode 10 for Fires of Nuala! If you wanted to read this far for free, be sure and get in soon, because we're upgrading the site in January, and there is no guarantee that the entire free book serialization will continue. Our evaluation shows that people tend to read from the beginning, and make up their minds quickly to either buy, come back later, or it's not for them.

You'll also see the link for Hidden Fires, which is also now available in e-book. There will eventually be a Kindle edition, but not until after the holidays.
