This is actually a good idea for an isolated genetic group. Several engineers created an app tied to the ‘Íslendingabók‘ database to solve the problem.

On Nuala during Sheel and Darame's time, they actually have something similar. The Atares do not forbid marriage between two fertiles related within a certain number of degrees, but they DO limit how many children that couple can have between themselves.

Regular Nualans can have group marriages and give that child as many half-siblings as they can.

Three engineers made an app for the ‘Íslendingabók‘ database. People can now easily, and on the go, look up how they are related to other Icelanders. And a precious feature, using the bump technology, allows people that meet to just bump their phones together, to instantly see if they are too related to take things any further. The engineers’ slogan for this feature was: “Bump the app before you bump in bed”.

Not everyone can donate blood. You may have lived during certain years in countries later found to be fighting Mad Cow Disease; you may be taking meds that cannot be easily filtered out; you may be in an immune-compromised state, and your white blood cells always bail first.

But if you can give blood? Here is one of the places that blood might be used. Another way they magically save lives. "Endless blood" saves the lives of new mothers where before, for thousands of years, we lost those women.

It really is the gift of life.

I like that.

During my recovery I became hypersensitive to taking supplemental Vitamin C, and stopped it. I get fresh lemon juice every day, instead. Here's another study showing us that free radicals are not (at the least) the only reason aging sets in.

A friend noted recently that she remembers me using low fertility with elves in a role-playing game, long ago, so the Nuala books didn't surprise her. Something new that I'm thinking my way through also includes that trope -- and here's still another article that may help explain why fertility taps at the back of my skull.

Note in this article that they mention that most Americans have measurable amounts of BPA in their urine. Then they say that studies with animals show problems with reproduction and with cancer linked to this stuff. And they go on to say enough about the men in the study and American amounts of this chemical to make you think -- wait a minute. . . .

Do I think we're poisoning ourselves, every day in many ways? Yes, I do. . . .

EDIT: Everyone is a critic! Now -- the book might be a holiday gift-giving opportunity.

My favorite from the article:

Readers also will learn that the humble barnacle has the longest penis in relation to body size in the world.

"It's stuck to a rock so it's going to be pretty hard to meet the opposite sex," Marris explains.

"So it has this penis that can be rolled out and just go wandering around the rock pools in search of a mate."

You've heard the phrase "Music of the spheres"?

Or, "I sing the body electric"?

NASA MODELS SHOW TREES CAN SLOW INCREASE OF ATMOSPHERIC CARBON

"Converting marginal agricultural land to forests may help slow the increase of carbon in the atmosphere, according to model-based results obtained by NASA scientists using space-based Earth observations and a state-of-the-art ecosystem model."

SNIP!

"When the research was analyzed, the top five states identified as having a high carbon storage potential by converting croplands to newly developed forests were Texas, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. The top five states with potential for converting rangelands or pastures were Texas, California, Montana, New Mexico and Colorado.

Research suggested that the southeast region of the United States has the most favorable conditions for afforestation due to its subtropical climate. In addition, model results suggested that large areas of croplands in South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin showed potential for carbon management and shouldn’t be underestimated."

Here's a blog entry about a now-hidden article on Male ducks of some species have weird, wonderful phalluses -- and only now has a (female scientist, nach) asked "Why?" and "How are the garages {IE female vaginas} built for these? Sounds like they should be interesting, too..."

[livejournal.com profile] juliabk found this one! Wish the article was still around; I clearly need an icon to go with my furry crab.
