Last year I donated five copies -- new copies -- of my novels to the local library, to replace all the ones that were stolen. I was just going to put down something like $10 a piece, since they are new and OOP books.

TurboTax doesn't allow that, really -- they have a ton of things you can check off, from thrift store to appraisal to 12 or 13 other options. But not just "This is what I would sell it for."

I finally figured out a way to make the value come out at $50, but I think I will print out the Amazon Partner's selling prices, in case I ever get audited. You see, I made a mistake, apparently, with this donation.

Last night, a new copy of Hidden Fires was listed at one Amazon Partner for $688. If it's still up there at that price, I think I will print out the listing. And I won't be donating any more copies of that book. I used to joke that it would be valuable someday, since Warner printed so few of the third in a series. But since you can sometimes pick up the used paperback for $1.50, I'd sort of forgotten about it. This was the first new listing in at least five years, and it trumps the $130 I saw the last time.

I may be setting up an Ebay store. A couple of signed new book sales might help out with bills in this (I hope) final stage of recovery....

The second book of the Chronicles of Nuala has gone to Kindle -- Hidden Fires and
Fires of Nuala can be found at the Amazon monster store.

And in honor of this event -- SALE! They each are only $3.99 a piece, a steal for such fine science fiction novels.

We now return you to your browsing....

I decided a FAQ was necessary. I got a few notes that suggested some people were reading Fires of Nuala too fast. So, check out the FAQ page at this site:

In my SF novels, I have microbes that when irradiated eat heavier metals at a voracious rate. Well, these little guys are working under pressure and icy temps, but they're doing the job:

They LIKE iron!

It's Episode 10 for Fires of Nuala! If you wanted to read this far for free, be sure and get in soon, because we're upgrading the site in January, and there is no guarantee that the entire free book serialization will continue. Our evaluation shows that people tend to read from the beginning, and make up their minds quickly to either buy, come back later, or it's not for them.

You'll also see the link for Hidden Fires, which is also now available in e-book. There will eventually be a Kindle edition, but not until after the holidays.

I've just gone to the trouble of rooting out a readable version of the mine drawing from Hidden Fires. I did this drawing, way back when -- mountains, locations of things, etc. and even signed it with Ardal's name at the bottom. One problem -- I don't remember if this is my type on it, or if Warner took my drawing, and used presstype or some such thing on it over the areas where I put in the words.

In some cases they copy edited my maps -- but not in this case. They used Initial Caps for things, etc. I guess I'm going to have to dig for a few more days in hopes of finding the original drawing. I really don't want to have to yank the e-book off the market, should someone at "Warner go, hey, we did that version!"

*Grumble*

Note: This is version 2 October 27, 2010

He had spent a hundred years seeking the woman called Silver; he still didn’t know if he was going to kill her.

Garth Kristinsson’s parents were free-traders, the aristocracy of con artists, able to fleece the dishonest with their own greed. But his father’s last scam went horribly wrong, and at the last, both his parents were dead. Garth wanted answers no authority could give him, so he searched six solar systems for any clue, any lead on his father’s partners-in-crime. One of them still lived – he would find her on the mysterious planet Nuala.

Nuala . . . planet of deadly radiation levels, humans who heal by touch, and the rarest platinum group metal in the known galaxy.

“Silver” is Darame Daviddottir, a famous free-trader who is now a citizen of Nuala – her husband, Sheel Atare, leads one of the planet’s most powerful tribes. Together they have brought an uneasy peace to a world racked by sterility, intrigue, and unimaginable wealth. For the first time in countless generations, Nualans are actually working together, their council a voice for interstellar trade and a sounding board for inter-tribal cooperation.

But the new ruler of Atare’s ancient enemy is a spoiled and arrogant genius named Rex Dielaan. When off-worlder Garth meets aristocrat Rex, it is a meeting of two con artists ripe for mischief...and maybe murder. Two misplaced quests explode into a conspiracy of death, treason, and abduction. There’s a plan afoot leading toward war, and it threatens Nuala’s peace, Atare’s prosperity . . . and Silver’s life.

So . . . what do you think? Would you pick up this book? Is the back intriguing? Is it too subtle? I'm wondering if the lettering on the cover is too dark, or just right. It looks great here, but the little LJ icon looks a bit dark. But since it's shown at a decent size at BVC and eventually (sigh) Amazon, that darkness might not matter much.

If I can get stuff turned in on time this week, there will be a free offering of this e-book at Library Thing next month.

I'm going along taking care of Style formatting in MS Word, trying to get done with Hidden Fires so it can move along to my expert format-er. I am trying to make this an easy job for her, no dangling bits left over.... And I discover that the diacritical marks on several words are NOT there. Apparently they got in there on one version of the word, and then I got distracted from the list. Or, heaven forbid, there are two $%#@ versions of the file floating around here!

Can't find the list. So I need to go through the entire blasted thing tomorrow AM before going out, if I can -- otherwise, this thing won't get off until late.

I keep thinking my health is improving, and then things like this laugh at me.
