A new "hate crime," but will it be labeled such?

And why hasn't the national news mentioned this...even if only in their Features area?

Did you know a fundamentalist bible school student decided that the local Episcopal church, among others, was "not following the bible they way they should" (sic) and torched the place?

After carefully putting all the bibles in a sack outside.

Very sad -- but they should sit on this young man hard. We don't need a gang of people deciding this is a good idea.

Behind the cut --

Coda: Had the http:// twice -- thanks for the catch!

Your link, he is broken. Try this one instead.

Notice that (1) this apparently wasn't his first such crime, and (2) he removes the Bibles from the church before torching it, but doesn't actually take them -- doubtless because that would be stealing, and a sin. Is anyone else hearing echoes of Tom Lehrer's "Irish Ballad"?

Double Double code...

I had a duplicate HTML code in it -- thanks for the catch!

I just would like a big, messy example made of this idiot. If he'd burned down a synagogue, they'd be all over it. But one branch of Christianity burning down another branch? We'll see.

Your link has a typo in it . . .

Boy, I disappear for turkey day and a typo nails me

Fixed.

I actually do try to catch everything. I don't want my fans to think I'm incompetent....

The cut is too good!

I can't get behind the cut.

But from what you have said, it sounds pretty bad....

It's fixed now -- had a duplicate code in the front end.

This wasn't the first church he's burned, they suspect.

I think a lot of suspicious fires will be re-examined, in the light if this confession. (And other suspects in other states.) It should be said that his religious college is expelling him for his behavior.

We could suggest that doesn't seem to be the best way to help him through this problem, but then fundie churchs are notorious for NOT ministering to the people on the outside. When you fall from a Christianist church, it's a Candyland slide down.

That's just dreadful. And what kind of bible do they have that says "burn down thy neighbor's church?"

If you follow the group's cherry-picked selections from the Old Testament (we rail against homosexuals but eat shrimp, etc. etc.) you may find something close to that....

As someone said on a blog recently, these people say they believe in Christ -- but they don't seem to believe Christ.

I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. I know that it can be tricky with food issues.

Thanks --

It went pretty well, considering how it can go. My friends made an effort to bring stuff I could eat. I cracked up Sparky Librarian by carefully removing a pecan every place I could without breaching the guts of her pecan pie. she used a syrup I technically could have -- but I would have slept 20 minutes - hour recovering from the glycemic hit.

Good food, good people -- Oliana0 outdid herself.

I hope yours was spent with people you love.

Yep - we always visit my parents. It's always such a triumph when you manage to do food based things and still fit what you need.

I think I would send a note saying, "What is wrong with you people? That's not what I wanted! No killing each other to prove you have the right religion, no deciding you know more than I do, no arrogantly telling others what I "meant" to say. Love each other, take care of each other. My heart is big enough to love all of you equally. Now play nice."

My heart is big enough to love all of you equally.

He told us that -- specifically. But I fear people don't listen to their prophets -- they just claim to speak for them.

That is such a scary story, on so many levels. But maybe the Christians will sit up and take notice of the scary fundies, now that the fundies are attacking the moderates....

I hope so -- civil wars with heavy-duty qeapons is a bad, bad idea.

We can hope --
