"You're going to Minnesota WHEN?"
Yes, I have managed to get myself into the caravan leaving for Minnesota Saturday.
1minnesotagirl needed a driving companion, and her daughter needed a therapist. The Critz work I do is probably gentle enough to help her and not hurt me. It's not disk surgery, but it might help R a lot.
Plus, I know how to do museum packing. So I'm on the "packing the antique china" detail.
Any Minnesotans want to help me find a slice of flourless chocolate cake/torte? I'll settle for awesome creme brulee, but chocolate must enter into the visit. Between illness and major life upheavals, I lost track of several Minnesota writers in the last decade. And there are others I don't actually know yet, although I appreciate their humor and zest for life via LJ.
So -- if anyone would like to distract us on this journey, just holler. It's going to be a fairly fast turnaround. I'm taking my computer and the adapter for the car, and will have to keep writing to entertain 1MG while she drives.
So I am digging around in my past, trying to find the trappings of my midwest days. I evaluate the newer jacket, which is actually too warm for most folks down here, but great for me. But it only goes to 15 degrees F, and they're talking 9 for a high. Perhaps blimp coat must come out of retirement for the trip. I look like the Michelin Man in it, but I'm a WARM Michelin Man. I found thermal underwear, and it even fits.
tia_tarina has loaned me awesome socks and mittens, and knitted me a wonderful baby alpaca wool scarf that I may wear inside the rest of winter.
sparkylibrarian made me some great fingerless gloves to help keep my hands warm while trying to type. (Yeah, yeah, I know -- I'm supposed to train the %$%$^@# Dragon Recognition. It's 57 degrees in my office. Does everyone understand? Good.)
I asked 1MG about buying some cheap boots from Lands' End, and she asked my size, and said she had a pair that would fit me. She also has two parkas down here. So I think we're good to go.
Then she asked if I had a sleeping bag. Well, yes, but only good to 15 degrees. I don't camp in the winter. Well, it's not for sleeping -- it's for OMG emergencies. (I am not laughing about this -- I always travel in good shoes and with a coat, gloves, and an ear band in the pockets, because if the car dies, I want to be able to walk without frostbite. And yes, I do this from the start of cold weather until spring arrives on March 2nd...) I have made custom gorp, I have jerky and Alfreda energy bars (La'ra bars) and chocolate for the trip. And apples, and nut butter, and lite ginger ale, and water. And maybe my Tempur-Pedic travel duffel. AND my massage table.
I think I'll pick up a space blanket at REI tomorrow. Just to be a completest.
bevhale has graciously offered us a place to stay on the trip up. I think we will spend a day with her before going on. 1MG has had a LONG winter, and needs a break without things that demand to be done staring her in the face. BH is a lovely, restful hostess. She only freaks out when she is removed from her environment. And she's up to about 80 adopted adult children, so we may find new investment counselors, people who can find us silk in Hong Kong -- they are endlessly creative and resourceful children. BH and MM are blessed. They do have a dog of Chaos, Zoe the wonder lab, whose brain hasn't been delivered yet, but Jilly the Australian Shepherd, a dog of Order, helps offset things.
I am looking forward to Flash-fried spinach or kale at the local wonderful Indian restaurant in OK City. I will even be noble about no sweet potato fries. (I will, however, bring my own sweet potatoes on the trip...it's a vegetable that doesn't taste ghastly on this medication. I will fight you to keep them. Just so you can't say I warned you...)
I should point out that it took until today for me to find the acid-free tissue paper to wrap the new ornaments in. So the tree is still up. But I didn't get to enjoy it much in December, so having a January tree has been nice. Normally it comes down the day after 12th Night.
I am in no position to throw stones about things staring you in the face that need to get done.
Writing level -- furious planning and research this day, followed by editing eight pages and writing three more. With more to come tomorrow.
*Corrected from mohair. The socks are mohair -- the scarf is baby alpaca wool.

And that scarf's baby alpaca. I *wish* I could get mohair that soft. That's cashmere micron level soft, dahling. :) The socks are mohair. They wear like iron, keep your feet warm but lose some softness. I'm experimenting with merino socks-- way too soft, but we have ways. . .
Wish I'd known you needed a space blanket earlier. I've got several from my trail riding days still in the original packaging. My first aid kid used to be a thing out of legend (doctor's daugther + too many veternary manuals).

I knew we were sisters separated at birth! I bought one for my kitchen after the Ex sliced his hand open. It's not great, but it's cheaper than buying some of the items separately.
I remember, alpaca. I often say the opposite of what I mean right now, but don't always notice it until after I see it in print, etc.
Whit was grinning at me, but I was wearing it inside last night! Thank you again!
