My niece Danielle (19) was born in the big Danielle push of the 80s. I remember when I told my sister that Danielle was one of the top ten names for girls, she was as steamed as if I'd caused it to happen. I pointed out that Danielle Steel was a bestselling author -- what did she expect?
Danielle, the girl's name, has dropped like a rock since its peak years and doesn't make top 20 anymore.

My great aunt (born ~1890) got tired of South Texas accents that turned "Ellen" into "Ellin". By shifting the last vowel, it encouraged something much closer to "Ellen" when spoken by South Texans. ;-) In my world (it's also my middle name, btw), "Ellan" and "Ellen" are pronounced the same way... and without the dreaded short "i" before the "n". ;-)
