"...an accidental tourist in...The Twilight Zone."

So, when we last left our heroine, one of the ISPs in her life (and she hates almost every one of them) appeared to have relocated her client's files just when an important update was due. She goes through all correspondence with said ISP, but nothing came after the 11/28/07 message that claimed they would be moved in early December (wrong). A NY missive with no real info was the last thing received. No orders, no info. Nothing about a "security question." (Has anyone noticed they all want the same sort of things for security questions? An acquaintance taking notes about memes would be in business.)

So she spent 45 minutes of hers and "Alex Miller"'s time checking cookies, dumping cache, a test page going up -- still, there were files in the correct place in the tree for Alex that did not show up on her page. The FTP worked flawlessly. Their sys admin page showed intermittent problems with ws.14 server (the server I'd been using for years.) I suggested the local backbone was down. He insisted that the Bangalore location was up, and it was not the server.

Finally, poor "Alex" thought to say: "Here are the FTP info you should have. Is this what you are using?" FINALLY -- BREAKTHROUGH. Apparently the ISP had moved things within the past two weeks (since I uploaded 15 days ago without a problem) changed the entry portal address, and neglected to tell the sys admin (me). I was not uploading to the hot site.

Yes, you have guessed it -- there is still a site on another server, and I could still FTP into it, weeks after the change took place. Which is why, of course, the new pages didn't show. Wrong server.

I think I'll go put the final touch on the kitchen (macro chef shows tomorrow! Must recover stainless pan from the Hs!) and crater.

I hate computers.

Them darn computer thangs

I'm glad to hear that ya'll solved the problems.

We were having so many problems with my former ISP that we moved away. We are now using One World Hosting, I believe, and haven't had any further problems. My internet expert, 2 Bad Mice, likes 'em....

Take care!

David

Computers aren't so bad, it's developers that suck.

Speaking of lame ISPs, I'm _still_ getting email from a script on a machine from an ISP that I left a year or so ago.

Dumbasses are still hosting and executing my site, it seems, though there is no access to the site itself.

I feel better. I think Thinker is correct -- an ISP will deliver flawless service for about two years -- then they get flaky/change owners/seriously change policies. The only one I never have trouble with is my own website ISP. Runs like the proverbial clock. He's a one-man show, though (in security, so he actually has secure service for only $5 a month) so I can't put anyone who has heavy 24 hour customer flow on his server.

Knock on wood, of course!

I've heard good things about One World, I think -- Canadian ISP? Or was mentioned with a Canadian group as good ones.

Between W and I, we can handle most of these glitches. But the day I surrender this to another, it will probably be an LMT who used to do computers, a student learning about computers, or the current Executive Secretary, who freely admits that anything past the START button is a mystery. (She has two children under 3, I don't blame her. She has enough going on riding herd on paperwork.)

I keep looking for ISPs who offer some small advice on the site, if asked -- even paid-for advice. But it seems to be the first thing to be jettisoned when an ISP changes.

Two Bad Mice -- love it!
