The Dark Horde has lost their leader. He's gone ahead to scout the final camp....
Writer Robert Lynn Asprin (AKA "Yang the Nauseating") died this morning, Thursday, May 22nd. I've been told that he was in a nap and could not be awakened. He was supposed to be the Author GoH at Marcon this weekend. The Marcon group lost their Science GoH, Hank Reinhardt, earlier this year, and decided not to replace him, so they already had one Ghost of Honor. I've heard a report that he died of a massive heart attack -- and that he was already there for the convention. Also heard that Jody Lynn Nye, his co-GoH partner, and Bill Fawcett have canceled their appearance, which is understandable. They were close to Bob. Don't know what this will mean for this year's Marcon. Only the death is confirmed -- the rest has come from various LJs/blogs, but no direct confirmation of their comments.
Bob was a founding member of the SCA's Dark Horde -- I've heard that watching him disarm before speaking to a king and queen was worth the price of admission. He was a flirt who never understood the POV of a woman's heart, and also a man who never questioned any woman's right to the writing big time.
I couldn't talk very long with him last time we did the same convention -- he would stake out near the bar and an ashtray, and I cannot do smoke right now. I always thought he'd outlive all of us -- just because he was so tough. I think he did most things the way he wanted. He did want to write a fantasy/alternate history about a REAL mercenary. It would have been cutting edge -- the THIEVES WORLD books were just an appetizer of what he wanted to write. (And this is a good reason why you should start the book you want to write right now....)
A man with many faces. He was generous with his knowledge of the industry, and taught me a lot about being a professional and getting paid for my work. He was misunderstood by many, and will be missed by many.
RIP, Bob. Save us some scotch at the next camp.

He certainly still had that ability to grab your imagination and pull you into a story with characters you could laugh at, cry with, but might not want to be standing next to in a fight.
I'll miss him.
