Trying to not start on the election....

But there are two things I'd like to say about the Republican ticket. Read (or not -- it's behind a cut) and in one instance, act, if you wish.

From a comment in TimesOnline.co.uk:

...check out one of the definitions of conservatism:
"Caution or moderation, as in behaviour or outlook"

I don’t know if Palin is up to the job. You don’t know either.

The point is McCain did not know or care.

Is that what you call putting your country first.

Received from a friend:

We are writing to you because of the fury and dread we have felt since the announcement of Sarah Palin as the Vice-Presidential candidate for the Republican Party. We believe that this terrible decision has surpassed mere partisanship, and that it is a dangerous farce-on the part of a pandering and rudderless Presidential candidate-that has a real possibility of becoming fact.

Perhaps like us, as American women, you share the fear of what Ms. Palin and her professed beliefs and proven record could lead to for ourselves and for our present or future daughters. To date, she is against sex education, birth control, the pro-choice platform, environmental protection, alternative energy development, freedom of speech (as mayor she wanted to ban books and attempted to fire the librarian who stood against her), gun control, the separation of church and state, and polar bears. To say nothing of her complete lack of real preparation to become the second-most-powerful person on the planet.

We want to clarify that we are not against Sarah Palin as a woman, a mother, or, for that matter, a parent of a pregnant teenager, but solely as a rash, incompetent, and all together devastating choice for Vice President. Ms. Palin's political views are in every way a slap in the face to the accomplishments that our mothers and grandmothers and great-grandmothers so fiercely fought for, and that we've so demonstrably benefited from.

*First and foremost, Ms. Palin does not represent us. She does not demonstrate or uphold our interests as American women. It is presumed that the inclusion of a woman on the Republican ticket could win over women voters. We want to disagree, publicly.*

*Therefore, we invite you to reply here <womensaynopalin@gmail.com> with a short, succinct message about why you, as a woman living in this country, do not support this candidate as second-in-command for our nation.*

Please include your name (last initial is fine), age, and place of residence.

We will post your responses on a blog called "Women Against Sarah Palin," which we intend to publicize as widely as possible. Please send us your reply at your earliest convenience - the greater the volume of responses we receive, the stronger our message will be.

Thank you for your time and action.

*VIVA!*

Sincerely,

Quinn Latimer and Lyra Kilston

***PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY!* If you send this to 20 women in the next hour, you could be blessed with a country that takes your concerns seriously. Stranger things have happened.

A final note -- previous VP candidates in modern times have hit the campaign trail within 48 hours, answering questions about their positions on the great issues of the day. Sarah Palin will have been the Republican VP candidate for 14 DAYS before she gives an exclusive interview to Charles Gibson at ABC.

That's six weeks before the election, folks. Six weeks to hear from the woman who will take over if McCain has to resign for health reasons. Whatever you wish to share with friends before the election, do it now.

Or at BEST, we'll have 4 more years of the Bush administration. No matter what you think of Bush as a man, the idea of someone in the White House just like him when unemployment is rising and gas prices are inching upward should scare you.

And remember one of McCain's campaign supporters is Phil Gramm, the " ...the American public should stop whining" about a recession consultant.

Thank you. Back to writing.

Now now, we all know that a key element of many Republican's lives is Faith -- faith in the unknowable and ineffable, faith-based social programs, and faith in their leaders.

So we should have faith that McCain has in fact made the best choice for us, and have faith that, against all actual evidence, he will turn this government around and steer it right.

Faith that McCain is in fact still a maverick at heart, even though he has snapped into line with his party over the last few years, reversing his previous stands. Faith that Palin is a woman of vision and not just a small town politician that looks unsullied by Washington only because she hasn't had enough time for the dirt to stick to her.

When these fine, upstanding Republican leaders say they will change the, to this point, Republican-dominated Washington (since a 1-vote majority in the houses is no match for a Republican president), it is faith that leads us to believe them! And faith, just as strong, that when Obama rallies around a call for change it is just the hooting of a fool into the wind.

Faith in the unknown and unknowable is the cornerstone of many of our lives; how else would we know the true nature of our God and our God's stance on all aspects of existence? Faith!

So it comes naturally to have faith that these Republican leaders are not just lying to us, bald-faced. Faith that our worldview is not based on a fiction, a dream of a time that never was, and a blinkering against the realities of the world around them.

I could of course cast claims of blind-faith to members of all parties, but for today I think we do in fact need a change -- and that change does not wear a Republican pin on their lapel.

I wish I could laugh.

This provoked a cynical grin, and devout hope it never happens:

Third Wave

Palin is particularly creepy. Here's video of her in church, a church where they actively hunt witches:

Scarier than any haunted house I've been through. I mean, I'm glad I know really good Christians (and people of other faiths) .. but this as an example of religion? Way freakin' scary.

There's a small church within driving distance of us that drove a woman out of town for being a witch because she taught yoga and other nefarious things.

Fortunately, when the minister attempted to carry this persecution to the next town she moved to, actually suggesting that if they burned out her home or business she would leave -- the local sheriff went over and told her to call him any time she felt threatened. His attitude was something like: "No, we don't judge people like that in this town. And we have laws against arson and stalking."

It was both frightening, and also good to know that not all small town people are so terrified they need a scapegoat.

Palin has not improved on second and third looks.

prebiotics

[identity profile] sheilagh.livejournal.com 2008-09-20 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prebiotic_(nutrition) -- jicama is one source!

The stuff I got was this product:
http://www.naturesstore.com/product_main.asp?productcode=12601&BrandID=498&Browse=

No indication there that it needs to be refrigerated, but that's where Wheatsville had it stashed, in the chilled case with other probiotics. That site seems to have a decent price, there may be other sources cheaper. The arabanogalactan came on my radar as particular good, so I'd suggest researching that. The inulin is probably already in your regular mix of fiber/etc.

Haven't used that as much, lately, because I got my cats stabilized with MegaFood's "MegaFlora", which I hunted down because it contains Lactobacillus Sporogenes, among other excellent species. The Sporogenes has a spore quality that takes it past small intestine into large intestine, so it bypasses earlier battlefields where most probiotics live, earn their wages, and die. The Sporogenes survives to colonize the large intestine, where it can do more good! At least, that's what I recall. This site merely highlights that it bypasses the stomach & reaches the intestines, without mentioning large vs small:

http://www.lactospore.com/benifit.htm

The MegaFlora I definite keep in the fridge, and I'll buy it in autumn/winter months so that shipping doesn't leave it baking on my front porch. There's also usually a site or two that has better deals & free shipping if I buy more than one bottle at a time.

Also, here's one post from that friend in New Orleans who documents tons of his self-experiments as well as articles he receives from other sources. This post talks about niacin helping "seal up" leaky gut: http://alobar.livejournal.com/2931120.html

From what I recall, there are various forms of niacin and I don't recall clearly which are "best" or if they're equally effective. Niacin, niacinimide, etc. There are tons of study citations & multiple articles in that post, so you might find more than I did.

Sorry, brain is very tired, but I wanted to share links with you!

Thank you so much, sheilagh --

I'm especially interested in the jumping the stomach to the intestines stuff. I think you mean that you did MegaFlora for both you and the cats? I'll try to scope all this out tomorrow -- in the meantime, ZZZzzzzz.
