Sig Line of the Week --

"Without me the literary industry would not exist: the publishers, the agents,
the sub-agents, the sub-sub agents, the accountants, the libel lawyers, the
departments of literature, the professors, the theses, the books of criticism,
the reviewers, the book pages -- all this vast and proliferating edifice is
because of this small, patronised, put-down and underpaid person."

Doris Lessing (1919 - )

Thanks to writer Ashley McConnell, who sent this to one of my writer group lists.

Have to shake my head...if it really all came down to us, then things would be far better run, and we could actually have some influence!

There is a lot of truth to it, but I wish --

The editors figure there are tons of people who want to be published, which is always at our back.

This is why we're trying BVC -- to find a place where we can improve out visibility and put OOP stuff.

Is the sequel to CROWN DUEL finally off the editor's desk and in the pipeline?

There isn't actually a sequel, but a prequel--and out from a small press.

Yeah--I cheer BVC--if I just had a handheld, or something on which I could read ebooks, I'd be all over it.

Ah, yes -- very nice package. Did Vera get reviews from Kirkus or the Library journals for it? Hope so -- Hope you can steal a few moments to write.

She sent out arcs in plenty of time but they ignored us.

Damn! Their loss, but that also hurts, too. You might ask Bev Hale if she has any suggestions at this point about getting the librarians to notice it. She got DAW to take a second Atevi trilogy from Cherryh, and she booted a real estate dude to the top 100 on Amazon.

I just don't have it in me to do marketing stuff...the one time I got my courage up to call a local bookstore to ask to do a signing (and it took me two years to get my courage up) the pr person sneered "I've never heard of you, and we don't just have anybody in here," which is the last time I've ever done that. Shudder. Besides, having lost my job, we are way, way too far in debt for me to hassle with the cost as well as the time and the anxiety.

Oh, blank (my favorite swear word. Tone is everything, and substitution can be made.) I am so sorry -- I live in terror of trying to find a new job with my "bad" days hovering in the background. I haven't been keeping up at LJ -- very long year, getting longer.

If there is anything -- info about other areas of the country, job leads -- that we can help with, remember the long-distance buds who might turn up a diamond in the coal field.

And as for bookstore signings -- I tried to get Elizabeth Moon and I into the local big bookstore when SPEED OF DARK and NIGHT CALLS came out. They never returned the calls -- the chains were much better. I took a lot of satisfaction reminding SF fans in Texas about the books come NASFiC time. Elizabeth was a Hugo nominee.

Next time, I suggest press releases. No personal contact required unless they want to follow up. And -- next time mention that "Crown Duel has XXX,xxx copies in print in hardcover and mas market, and was a so-and-so recommended/starred whatever. The Crown Duel fans are eagerly awaiting the next book in that world."

I recommend deep breathing, Tai Chi, and South River 3-Year aged Barley Miso -- good for healing stomachs and GI.

Well, Vera does send out press releases.

Yes! Tai Chi and deep breathing are Good. I will have to try the miso!

Good for Vera -- I was thinking specifically to the bookstores you'd like to sign at --

No, I don't do signings. All that stuff makes me too anxious, I was raised to believe myself a fraud, and I will never get past it. So I just hope the books will find their way to readers, and go back to writing.

You must do what works for you. Depending on whether I go all the way into remission will determine what I can do for PR. Writing/drawing, personal life and then mundane job, if found, will be bullet list.

Can you write? Or are you still frozen?

Writing--no prob. Have just come down from writing a 250k word one, toughest ever. And whacking into other projects. It's only the other end, the actually getting them into print that I'm no good at.

Fantastic on the close! The selling part...well, we talked a little about that. Did you know that Pat Wrede is now with Jennifer Jackson at Donald Maas?

I'm still with Jon, and hope to make him his 15% in the next couple of years. At least I'm mostly writing again. And I think it's good.

Now if real life would take a turn for the better....

Well, isn't that the truth. Thanks for sharing.
