Fourth of July weekend

"...for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor."

A moment of silence, please, for the brave men who signed this document. Over half of them died or had their lives, and even their families, destroyed during the revolution. We may be the longest running experiment in history in overthrowing a government and replacing it with something better for the majority of its people.

Lift a glass to the countless men and women who fought, in may ways and in very different Americas, for "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."

Everything else is up to us.

sweet!

One of our great accomplishments, I believe, is that since that time we have had peaceful transfer of power, even when our president has been assassinated. This hasn't always been the cas with upstart nations born in revolution like ours.

Very true --

The rest of the world might have been laughing with the Gore/Bush business, but we didn't go to war over it.

Of course, if we had known what Darth Cheney was going to do to our country and its reputation, we might have loaded those arms we keep and bear and marched on Washington....

You're barely old enough to remember, but I remember someone commenting during the oil embargo after seeing lines looping city blocks: "Your people are amazing. We've gone to war over less than this!"

We don't. Most of us are still people of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
