Austin showing of UNDER OUR SKIN: A Dramatic Tale of Microbes, Medicine and Money

Here is a disease most doctors know nothing about. If you don't get treated within 30 days, you could be in for free fall in the American health system.

This documentary is running at the Arbor Cinema at Great Hills, Austin, TX October 2nd - 8th.

You can see the movie this weekend, but you apparently cannot get on-line tickets until Monday. You'll find info at the bottom of this page:

Take friends! I promise you will not be bored by this documentary. You may end up on the edge of your seat, waiting for the "other shoe to drop". It's opening for limited runs in many places -- see if it's available in your area.

Those of you who have asked if there was anything you could do for me? This is it. Grab a few friends and go see this movie. Because of the politics surrounding this disease, it may be many years before every doctor recognizes a Lyme patient. Make sure you know the signs of this condition. I would not wish Lyme upon even my worst enemy.

My greyhound came down with a version of Lyme (it mutates) three years ago. He was hospitalized in one of the best veterinary facilities in Southern California, with great specialists. Even so, he almost died several times. It took weeks of tests and consultations with veterinary specialists back east to figure out what it was, and then more time to find the precise combination of antibiotics to knock it down. Notice I didn't say "cure." It is now dormant in his bloodstream -- we found that out after he crashed twice after the initial "recovery." He's on doxycycline and prednisone for the rest of his life.

And yes, it was enormously expensive, and the pet insurance found ways in which to avoid paying most of the bill.

Ouch on the pet insurance...

So maybe I won't get insurance on my next kitten.

Yes, I know about the Lyme costs...I'm running $50,000+ in the last five years. Probably more; I stopped counting around $48,000. Don't know if I can ever go into remission. I'm trying diet control, etc. to see if that makes the drugs work better.

Hope your dog is feeling much better. You want quality of life for your fur friends -- but where to draw the financial line is hard.

I hope that all the humans in the household were also checked for Lyme.

Sure. I might even find my copy to be able to loan out.
