Not politics, but common courtesy and decency....
Be a light in dark places.
We are a mini-United Nations of backgrounds and colors. We have no place left for bigotry and hate-mongering. I know people lash out like this when they are afraid. So -- we need to have our leaders speak to this, and help people be less afraid and pulling together.
This is one way to confront this -- http://colorofchange.org/cgi-bin/py/hate-petition.py. They are sending letters to National Republican figures to demand they confront the Republican extremists and call them on their behavior. Here's a portion of the letter you can send from their site. Unfortunately, you cannot edit the letter, but you can add to it.
A portion is at my Live Journal, but may not pass through to other sites. You may need to go to http://alfreda89.livejournal.com to see the rest. So -- if inclined, this is a bit simpler than starting from scratch. Or -- if you have time, borrow some of theirs, write the rest yourself, and send independently, which will have even more of an impact.
Dear friends,
It's time to hold the Republican Party accountable.
You've probably heard about Tea Party members shouting "Nigger!" at Black Congressmen during a protest in Washington, D.C. last weekend. One of the protesters spat on Congressman Emmanuel Cleaver, while another called openly gay Representative Barney Frank a "faggot" as the laughing crowd imitated his lisp.
But Saturday was just the most recent example of the intolerance and hate coming from right-wing extremists this past year. At times it's been instigated by Republican leaders. When not, it's usually condoned and seen as part of a strategy to score politically. Either way, it's completely unacceptable and has to stop.
It's time to confront Republican leadership and force them to take responsibility for the atmosphere they've helped create. Please join me in signing ColorOfChange's petition confronting Republican leaders about hate and fear-mongering in their party, and ask your friends and family to do the same:
