Lessons from the blue zones -- live longer and healthier

I saw this article last year at a Doctor's office, and now it's on-line. There's a Greek island called Ikaria where an extraordinary number of islanders live past 90. And we're talking live -- they work, live independently, have active sex lives without Viagra, etc.

That catch your attention? Here's the article -- if I can find my instructions for LJ hidden posts, I'll bullet point the high points, but for in situ, read on:

http://www.aarp.org/health/longevity/info-09-2009/more_good_years.2.html

1.) Eat wild greens, they're high in antioxidants.
2.) Sip herbal teas daily.
3.) Throw out your wristwatch.
4.) Nap daily.
5.) Walk where you are going.
6.) Phone a friend (we're talking strong social and family connections.)
7.) Drink goat's milk.
8.) Eat a Mediterranean diet -- whole grains, fruits & veggies, olive oil and fish. The Ikarians eat a few more potatoes than average (they grow well there) and are up in their mountains, so a little more meat. Hedging works -- wholesale ignoring, like a ton of sugar and refined white flour? That's a no-no.
9.)Eat Greek honey (American honey doesn't rack up the same way.)
10.) Pour on that uncooked olive oil!
11.) Get your hands on FRESH produce -- grow it or find a farmer's market.
12.) Get religion -- find your spiritual niche and stay in it.
13.) Eat sourdough bread filled with complex carbohydrates.

These people believe in staying up late and sleeping in. They're optimistic and like to party with friends. So -- not such a hardship, eh? I know people addicted to sugar who won't make slight lifestyle changes because they don't want to give up the things they like most. My response is, "eat less of it and avoid twenty years of dying slowly of diabetes or heart disease." You have to think about this?

I'm in. When can I move?

I suspect only the independently wealthy -- or those ready to leave the world behind and raise goats -- can move there. We have the hard job -- doing all this while remaining In The World, as the Church puts it about being a Christian in a secular life.

It can be done. But it takes work! %^)

probiotics, too

the raw veggies would have some .. if they do yogurt, per se, that'd cover it, too. It's been a long while since I had the link to it, but some 5 out of 7 of the oldest living groups around the world have soem sort of regional probiotic food or beverage they consume, in addition to living up fairly high and walking everywhere. Keeps the bowels in tip top shape, I imagine...

The article suggested that they get it from the goat's milk and the honey, which is antibacterial, antiviral, etc. etc.

indeed!
