Here we go again....WBC will be at the Tucson funerals.

John Scalzi has gathered some dandy links about Westboro "Baptist" "Church," all of which are worth following, including the comments over at Laughing Squid. Sounds like Phelps grew up in Hell, and raised his children there. We knew all that hate had to come from somewhere. But the post suggesting he is a "con man" could also be quite true (and makes sense, when you think about the machine required to get all these permits. We're talking a full-time job, there. And all legal under the laws of the land.) I hope the people planning to shield the mourners in Tucson read the post about the "con man" -- they need to understand that they cannot respond, they cannot even notice WBC -- they need to create their wall, and provide their music, and be attractive -- and unmoving -- scenery.

But let's be precise in our language. WBC may be legally a church, but it seems more like a satanic church to me -- representing the exact opposite of the most important tenets of Christianity. That's what satanists do -- mock and tear down everything good there is about Christianity. It's all very sad.

Note: There are people who are more deistic in their religious beliefs, and also people who worship Satan as a supernatural deity, who call themselves Satanists. I am not referring to them -- I'm referring to the so-called symbolic or casual satanist types who think that spitting on a cross makes them cool. Those people might have matured into the WBC, in a book out there somewhere....

I'm not a Satanist but I know some Anton Le vey peeps...

Just want to say I hate the WBC, but I'm going to go out on a limb say WBC's actions are not representative of true Satanism. The WBC are a bunch of bossy jerks who want to impose their brand of Christianity on everyone else.

Well, if you want to be super-precise, no -- that puts WBC back into true hate speech and anti-Christianity behavior, but there's no law that says they have to represent the tenets of Christianity to be a church. Unitarians are called a church, and they do not believe the the man called Christ was the Savior of the World -- which most people who call themselves Christians feel is sorta the idea. (Not all -- and not all mean it the same way. Ah, diversity!)

I think of Satanists as people who are heavily into rebellion, and rebellion against organized religion, especially in Western countries, is right up their alley. (Actually, I think of them as those loony people who had the used coffin sale here in the Texas Hill Country, but that's another story....) I was not thinking of members of the Church of Satan, circa 1966, who are more like deists or worship Satan as a separate supernatural entity.

So I should make that "satanists" with a small "s" to be more accurate. Thanks --

It's all koo! That's what I thought you meant! Because according to your definition, some atheists could also be described as "satanists" as they also mock things that are good about Xianity. I think Unitarians have a broad and flexible belief system. Some do think of Jesus as a world savior but they are not limited to the idea that Jesus is the *only* world savior. =^_^=

Yeah, the Unitarians are sweet. I sometimes think that if I went back to organized religion, I'd go to a Unitarian Church. My belief system has expanded so far, I'm not sure I'd fit in where I was raised.

The man always asks us to be better than we think we can be. He's a powerful speaker.

Maybe a few people will hear his words.
