Courage under fire....Japan faces the elements

Could you remain composed enough in your panic to keep a camera running during an 8.9 earthquake? This person did.

One young woman snapped this photo from what was left of her home before fleeing.

In the face of such natural destruction, and what is purposely being done in the Middle East, I can only pray that most of these brave people will survive this trial.

Would we fare as well? If an 8.9 earthquake hit anywhere in America, the city would be scrap. And I say anywhere. I've been researching the New Madras Earthquakes in the early 1800s, when the Mississippi actually ran backwards for several days. The quake caused 30 foot plus changes in elevation. Yes -- in the southern Midwest. We are overdue here for another one. When that earthquake hit, it caused church bells in Boston, MA to ring!

The big news story on the left coast is that we have the same subduction configuration off the coast as Japan. AND we are 50 years overdue for a big quake. We have a lot longer coast for that tsunami to hit. Experts are saying we'll have maybe 20 minutes warning when the quake happens. Not if. When.

Yesterday we saw live feed of people walking the beach and climbing Haystack Rock while the warning sirens were blaring. Fortunately the waves weren't very big and really only caused damage inside of harbors. But still. These people were really stupid. The geologists were calling such activity culling the gene pool on national television.

Hi -- For some reason Live Journal didn't send me notification on this. That new Beta system LAG's friend shared with her was quite sobering -- every flex of that subduction off Japan's coast caused flexes on the west coast and in the center of the NA continent.

Speaking of culling the herd -- take a look at this video I found over at Andrew Sullivan's site. I can't help but wonder if the crazed individual in the white Smart Car at the beginning made it to some sort of safety, hit a spot in the road where he could go no farther -- or if the water caught up to him.
