If you're not dancing, why not?

Ballroom dance, that is.

Did you know that Swing, both East and West Coast, is a ballroom dance? So is Cha-Cha, or Rumba. You'll fall in love with American Waltz, and Bolero? Oh, my! We're talking great exercise and great fun -- plus, this is the ONLY form of exercise that exercises your brain as much as your body. We're talking something like 75% less chance of Alzheimer's showing up.

Interested? If you're in Austin, Texas, there's a nonprofit out there with great teachers (including one of only two certified American Ballroom Dance Instructors in the region) and room for you! Ladies, this is a great way to get in shape and have a lot of fun. And gentlemen -- you will NEVER go wrong learning how to dance WELL. And my favorite instructor, Richard Fowler, will teach you how to dance well. He'll teach you how to lead. And this will attract women -- yes, it will! Just get into it, have some fun, get in shape and learn steps. You can be quite competent in a few months, and if you keep at it, women will be racing over to dance with you!

I'm finishing up Foxtrot 3 and Bolero 5 classes tonight. We vote on upper level demand classes, so next session's demand hasn't been decided, but with luck will be Foxtrot 4. You can drop by at the Hancock Center just to see how our classes are handled -- Don and Richard alternate in the big room, depending on what they're teaching.

Already know how to dance? Did you know we have inexpensive dances every Saturday night at Austin Uptown Dance? Come by and give us a try!

It's too bad I hate dancing. I only enjoy solo dance stuff like belly-dance, Nia space, or club dancing with no partner.

It is too bad! Ballroom dancing is the most fun you can have with a partner in public without getting arrested for decency law violation!

But you are correct -- a bad partner in dance, like in anything else, stinks.

Even better, there's contradancing in Austin! Contra is great fun, beginner-friendly, and you don't have to have a partner to attend. Plus it's easier than ballroom; if you can count from 1 to 8 and walk from Point A to Point B, you can do about 90% of what's required, and the rest is "fake it until you learn it".

It probably is easier, which is funny considering the word "contra" is guaranteed to strike fear into the hearts of serious dancers everywhere!
