Aspiring Writers Info: Can you sell a book by its cover? Mais oui --

Over at the How to Write Shop. Lori Devoti talks about her experiences with changing around covers to fit the audience she wants to reach. Her advice? Take off the author and editor hat and put on the ad hat. You need to sell the sizzle, not the steak.

Maybe this is what I need to do -- change the covers for my Nualas. But to what?

Hmm. Considering you got the original artwork and they clearly shout fantasy and planet... I'm not sure if an affordable change would work better...

Maybe fiddle with the fonts or see if a closer-up shot somewhere would work better? Especially previewing at small size, because usually you come across e-book covers first in the smallest version on Amazon or other e-book stores, before people click for more when they're intrigued.

Did you read the various ruminations on how the Andrews Team decided on the current cover of Silver Shark - with input by their agency/publisher? I read them via LJ Feed, so I followed along there.

And how Ilona fiddled until she got Loretta Chase's Captives of the Night cover without any associations to other regency writers...

Even Devoti says she eventually paid a professional to make her cover.

Analysis time.

What are the various nitch markets for Nuala? (that article talks about antique shop lovers, dog lovers, etc)

Go wide .. what ALL various subgenre readers can you think of?

Rattle those off, first, before zooming back-out to notice the bigger pool of less distinct readers that might be jazzed.

All good points. I suppose my life is too complicated to be thinking about this right now, but it did occur to me that these were good selling covers in the 80s/90s. Maybe not as much now?
