Sorry posts are irregular --

-- but the loss of my BBediting system with Firefox has really hurt me. "Make Link" has its uses, but it takes the page you are on. So if I bring a link from somewhere else to paste into my Live Journal, the system changes the link to my Live Journal "Make an Entry" page before I can paste it in! Or this has been my experience.

My attempt to upgrade with the newer BB version leads to an add-on that is packaged in an extension my machine doesn't recognize. Attempts to remedy this took over an hour and did not result in the machine acknowledging the extension. I just don't have time for this -- I'm still ramping up to the fast pace life demands right now, and now my father's health tanking has really complicated things.

So -- there will be posts this week before I hit the road, on numerous topics. Just not quickly.

BBCode Add-on

Did you try the hack of the guy who updated it to work with Firefox up to 9 in the comments of the original extension? http://www.mediafire.com/?ld1s51fkzte3d83 - is the usual .xpi file so ought to install.

I haven't updated Firefox to any of the higher initial numbers than 4 so I can't tell you if it works though.

Other than that I hope that you and your dad will be okay and get your health back!

That's what I tried to install. My system won't accept .xpi, and attempts to get it to do so failed -- I just stumbled around with other programs that did a lot of things, but didn't seem to solve the problem.

So, not too happy with Firefox 7.0.1 -- it works fine, but it took away a useful add-on and nothing else fills that niche.

Yeah, working on going to help Dad for two weeks without eroding my own gains!

Oh, you're not on Windows? Then I have no idea - I've always used some form of Windows - currently Windows 7 64.

That is what is so $%%@@ about this! I run on Windows XP! Why can't the system find this? I allow updates!

Okay, I've deinstalled my old version and downloaded the Mediafire link - I told Firefox to open it with Mozilla Firefox.exe - so you have to know where that is on your PC so it opens there - when I did so it said I should only install Add-Ons I can trust, then said it had installed and I should restart Firefox to use it. It had even remembered the two special tags I had created - for blockquote and the spoiler tag on GoodReads, so I say it works as advertised in general - I just can't test it in the higher Firefoxes.

You are a wonder, Estara! Do you know what the literal name of the add-on is? BBEditing isn't enough to bring it up, for some reason.

The literal name is BBCode - which is of course confusing because that is the general name for Bulletin Board Code - instead of HTML Code.

This is the actual page at Addons Mozilla but commenter Sudowudo uploaded his hack to Mediafire so you have to allow opening of that .xpi file from there.

Well, it was a wrestling match, but I think I got it to work! I was saving the program before, which may be why my system couldn't find it -- it would make a fast check, and then flip out.

NoScript fought the MediaFire site vigorously -- way too much crap on their site opening -- but I finally got it to load. Then, after two reboots of Firefox, I went to add-ons and asked the system to reload now. I can see BBCode in the right click, so it might be there! (But it was grayed out on the Mozilla Add-On list as not compatible for 7.0.1, so even fewer people will be able to find it.)

I'll try it in a bit -- now, I need to go re-read the last Allie entry to soothe my soul!

Thank you so much for your trailblazing!

It should stay greyed out, simply because the original developer no longer supports it and hasn't updated the version info - but from the comments on the page the basic functionality seems to have transferred nicely and so fiddling with the compatibility info inside the .xpi file is all that is needed to make it work.

I just hope it works as advertised ^^ on Firefox 7 - the hacked version definitely works on my Firefox 3.x - the hacker did say he set the version limit to 9 so if it works you should be able to use it until then.

I usually use AdBlockPlus and never see any of the advertisments on Mediafire and it works no problem. Still, I have heard NoScript is supposed to be very useful as well.

Go on soothe your soul!
