The first for the ofrenda next year for the Days of the Dead....
Sorry to be so silent -- my father's computer has so many security features, Live Journal would not let me in. Depending on your point of view, it did or did not end well. Dad passed the evening of Thanksgiving, having waited until Mom was asleep and we were out of the room. Once hospice took over and he refused his meds, he lived six days, most of it in a coma. It was a blessing in that he was finally out of pain -- my mother commented that he looked so young, with the pain lifted from his face.
I'm afraid the past two months has messed with my own recovery, and nothing has gotten done on the manuscript. So don't know how often I'll be posting. But I will continue "Let the Gluten Go," since avoiding gluten on my trip was one of the things that kept me able to function.
There are war stories about starting to clean out the condo, but they are for later. I was stunned at what papers want for obits now -- quite a money maker for them, I imagine.
KIMBRIEL, William Donald "Don"
William Donald Kimbriel, DDS, 79 years old, died peacefully in Oro Valley, AZ on November 24, 2011. He was born in Ardmore, OK December 12, 1931. Don Kimbriel grew up in Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Indiana, attending Wabash College in Crawfordsville, IN and Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis, IN. He was an initiate of the Tau chapter of Beta Theta Pi. The Korean War interrupted his college years. Dr. Kimbriel served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged as a corporal. Returning to civilian life, he completed his education and became a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1959.
Dr. Kimbriel married Katharine “Kitty” Layman Schell of Indianapolis, IN on June 4, 1955. They moved their family to South Bend, IN where he established his private practice. During his decades of living and working in South Bend, Don Kimbriel was a member of South Bend Lodge 235 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and Portage Lodge 675, the Orak Temple of A.A.O.N.M.S. He was a Shriner and a 32nd degree Mason. Dr. Kimbriel was also a lifetime member of the American Dental Association.
Don Kimbriel was known as a man who enjoyed working with his hands. When the city called to clarify the size of a shop he was building, he had to tell them that he was indeed building a shop that was larger than his two-car garage. His daughters remember him working evenings in his home office, wax and dental tools spread before him, as he listened to old movies from Chicago Channel 9 and built bridges, crowns and dentures for his patients. He constructed a summer cottage for his wife Kitty, and they spent many happy vacations in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Don enjoyed miniature trains, and loved to make N gauge and Z gauge dioramas. He made gold jewelry for his wife and daughters, and dabbled in tiny bead work.
Dr. Kimbriel was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Augustus Kimbriel and Frances Eliska Stricklin Kimbriel, and his brother and sister-in-law Harry Augustus Kimbriel, Jr. and Betsy Helen Green Kimbriel. He is survived by his wife Katharine Layman Schell Kimbriel, his daughters Katharine Eliska Kimbriel, Elizabeth Anne Kimbriel Stillwell, and Karen Christine Kimbriel, his son-in-law Gregory Scot Stillwell, his grandchildren Danielle Elizabeth Stillwell and Christopher Scot Stillwell, and a host of nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Pentwater, Michigan at an undisclosed date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Casa de la Luz Hospice, 7740 North Oracle Road, Tucson, AZ 85704.
The family would like to thank Dr. Stephen Liao and his staff, Mountain View Retirement Village and its dedicated, compassionate employees, and the Casa de la Luz Hospice group for their exceptional concern and care during this time. Special thanks go to Rose Marmolejo and her associates Andrea Grajeda and Anna Guerene for all their hard work and loving attention.
