Aspiring Writers Info: Apple's New iBooks Author App

Now you knew there was going to be another shoe dropping somewhere.

Before you rush to use it, there's a little detail in the contract you should be aware of...can you say "another exclusive ebook format?"

That "You can't sell it elsewhere" line probably wasn't meant to mean what he thinks it means. And now that he's brought it up, it will most likely be corrected.

I think they mean is you can't sell an iBook anywhere but through the iBooks store. So no making an iBook and selling it through a third party - Apple wants to keep a firm grip on their corner. It's like iPhone apps can't really be sold except through iTunes.

Not that it's really enforceable, anymore then the writers interpretation.

Enforcement is not a big deal when you have legions of lawyers behind a brand. No one wants to cross them -- or be lucky enough to have a book go viral and then have Apple come after you for their cut.

As you say, hopefully it will be tweaked to correct this probably unintended result.

It makes sense -- but no one ever said lawyers trying for a fast one made sense!

It will be interesting, years from now, to find out whether they DID mean to try a content grab, or is this was just careless construction of their EULA.

I'm sure the businessmen said "We want them not to be able to sell their books anywhere else!" (and meant iBooks) so the lawyers ran with it to see what they could get away with...

I agree, Apple will most likely clean up that little bit of text very quickly.
