And we may have a winner....(Mystery Lily is found?)

From a friend in McKinney, TX:

Most likely they are Oxblood Lilies (rhodophiala bifida) They are clear deep red with green throats, 18" tall and the leaves go away in the spring as they bloom (like your photos.) Very reliable they like shade best, can grow in lawns and are not found at big box garden centers.

Less likely but possible Amaryllis (hippeastrum johnsonii) is an old fashioned
red that is found in older gardens and has smaller blooms than the monsters sold over the holidays. You flower looks a lot like this plant but it keeps it's leaves while blooming.

I checked around, and it does look a lot like the Oxbloods--the leaves don't look like the second contender.

Thanks to CJ Mills for dividing hers--which is why I have some! I hope the ones I didn't plant last year will forgive me and be happy when I find them some ground of their own--maybe under the hackberry.
