"NOOK Treasure Hunt: Show Us Your NOOK!"

EDIT: This contest is now over, but I do occasionally participate in contests, so keep an eye out for more fun!

My joy is to write fiction, especially fantasy and science fiction, filled with new worlds, new technology and magic, mystery, and even a touch of romance. I love interesting characters doing interesting things. I want people to be able to escape into my worlds.

Right now, for so many, many reasons, we all need to escape. So several of my friends and I have decided to share gifts with you -- gifts of escape.

All the various eReaders -- Kindle, NOOK, etc. -- are hardware platforms. The format is generally EPUB or MOBI. NOOKs, for example, take EPUB, and Kindles MOBI. (Although *cough* DRM-free EPUB files can readily be converted to MOBI for the Kindle. We're all about choice!)

You see a lot of promotions, but friends tell me that not enough of them are for NOOKs. Today, we remedy that. Until December 31st, we're offering a meme game to those who would like a little bit of fun -- and to earn free EPUB (the Nook format) books for playing.

Show me a picture of you with your NOOK! (Keep it clean, people.) You can post this on my Facebook feed, or my Twitter feed. You can post it at Live Journal if you happen to belong. You may have to friend me, but that just takes a moment. (Goodreads and MySpace people, please post to one of the other locations!) When you do that, as soon as I see the picture (this could be minutes or an entire day, because I have a life, too) I will send you an email back to your private account. It will contain a coupon code for you to use over at the bookstore at www.bookviewcafe.com for *Fires of Nuala*, the first of my SF series.

AND -- you will ALSO get a coupon code for not one, not two, but THREE more ebooks. You'll get Vonda N. McIntyre's *Starfarers, Book One of the Starfarers Quartet*, Jeffrey A. Carver's *Eternity's End*, and Jennifer Stevenson's *King of Hearts*. That's a total of three SF and a romantic comedy.

Yes, we sound like a movie title. Lucky you -- that's a lot of great ebooks!

But there's more! You can go to any of the following authors' URLs, because they are also playing Show Me Your NOOK! They will have similar instructions to mine, although the way you get the ebook may vary. Fantasy, Chick Lit, Humor, Mystery, Regency, Romance, Science Fiction, Thrillers -- who knows what they're offering? Be sure to check back for an update post, because others may join in the fun as word spreads.

Here are the other authors playing Show Me Your NOOK! (Jeff, Vonda & Jen are here, too, but you're posting for them here.)

How do you sideload an epub file into your NOOK? Like this:

1) Download the epub file to your computer.
2) Attach your NOOK to the computer with its USB cable.
3) A “Nook” drive will appear in My Computer (PC) or Desktop (Mac).
4) Copy and Paste, or Drag and Drop downloaded EPUB (or even PDF!) files into the My Documents folder on the Nook drive.
5) Go to My Library on the Nook, hit View My Documents, and then hit Check for New Content.
6) Choose one of the files you sideloaded into My Documents and press Select to open it.

You can also read EPUB on other devices! Suggestions here: http://bookviewcafe.com/bookstore/reading-bvc-ebooks/

We believe that if we want a thriving book community, we need lots of options. We need print, we need ebook, we need CHOICE. So that's why we are doing this. We support choice! We support DRM-Free places like Book View Cafe, where you can go buy EPUB, or MOBI, or even on occasion other formats like PDF. If you go looking, you'll find lots of new choices. Go check out www.BookViewCafe.com if you don't believe me.

Be an explorer. Show us your NOOK!

Obligatory disclaimer: Copyright to these free books is retained by the authors. You may share this post in its entirety. All pictures must be posted by 11:59 PM, December 31, 2012, CST. If anyone posts any of these EPUBs to a torrent site, the portal closes and we won't have any more games. This is a gift to you, not an invitation to set the book free forever. If you post a picture that would be considered in bad taste, it will be deleted and you won't get a coupon code. Thank you for keeping things fun!

Your Merlyn looks like a negative image of our Moonlight. And about as devious, or perhaps just clever! C'mon folks, be clever like a cat and ask for your free ebooks!

Here's a good picture of his late older brother. He's a chocolate cat -- dark chocolate!

And a sneaky lover boy.

An exceptionally lousy picture of me--but it includes my Nook

What can I say; I took it myself with my phone. Looking forward to some good reading. :)

You look great! ;^) I'll try to send the codes through your LJ email!

Here's my picture. I think I've protected this so you can see it:

It's actually a Kobo, not a Nook, but it reads EPUB very happily too, so I hope it counts.

If you have trouble with LJ's message system, my gmail account is the same as my LJ account.

I live in Sweden, and Nook isn't available here. But, I have a Cybook Odessey that I love.
Here's the link ( I hope it works!)

That's impressive, Mikaela -- give them a try and let me know if they work! I'll send the coupon codes to your Live Journal private email address.

This is my transformer tablet - er, on the bus. You might notice how I have cannily removed the tablet from the keyboard to emphasize its tablet nature. I actually read more on my phone, but I used the phone to take the picture.

And in fact I have it open to FBReader which is an open source general purpose reader, though my preferred format to read with it epub. I also do have the nook software on the tablet but a) it didn't like my net connection on the bus and b) I only use it to read drm'd stuff, because FBReader is superiod in all respects. It even does text to speech, which the android apps for kindle and nook both don't do. I have at least one friend who is dyslexic enough that TTS allows him to read an awful lot more than he would otherwise. I just like being able to keep "reading" the book I can put down when I'm driving, riding, or working at the bench. (<= only for routine experiments, of course.)

(Okay, just a link. I'm on my tablet, not my real computer, and I'm having trouble getting it to cough up enough information for a real link.)

Merlyn approves, and is sending you four coupon codes!

I wanna play!

I'll read most anything, but SciFi has been my mainstay since . . . well, never mind how long.

Thanks for the offer!

John

Oh, John, I'm sorry you found this so late! The contest has expired! Some people may still be offering a free or discounted book, but the contest ended on December 31st. I need to edit my post to reflect that.

Since you drew it to my attention, I'll tell you what -- you go over to www.bookviewcafe.com and check out the site. Look at my three Nuala novels. Pick the one you'd first like to read, and let me know what it is. If LJ will allow me to send an EPUB file to your email, I'll send you that file.

Some of the other writers may have a special going on this month, so you should check out their links, just in case. Might be a different book, but you could still try out their work.
