Pursuing the Win7 option?

Right now I am trying to jump my last nerves and write this contract letter/rates to the contracting firm. After I apply for a couple of state/fed jobs, I may pursue it.

At the least, I'll investigate the work-around the casino start page that Scalzi found.

What is your current computerage situation? I think I've lost track...

It's a nice little Toshiba Satellite with an Intel i5 processor. But I hate that everything I need to actually WORK on the machine is buried. I need to get Office, too -- trying to decide if I need to spring for Publisher and learn how to use it for POD.

I would look for Office 2010 to get it cheaper, but fear it may not work with WIN 8. So may need to get WIN 7.5 for that reason. Have one more lead on Office 2013.

Depending on what your constraints are, you might consider Ubuntu Linux (or some other flavor of linux) and Libre Office - which has the advantage of being free and being generally compatible with MS Office. It always takes a few months to catch up with the latest version, but to my mind that's a small price to pay for not being indentured to MS. And I say that as a former MS employee of several years. And the backwards compatibility is generally better than what you get with the newer version of office.

Oh, hey, it even runs on Windows, so you don't have to install Linux.

I have LibreOffice -- so far I'm impressed, but I have to make sure that when I do correction/notes, etc. in their version of WORD, it opens up fine in WORD whatever. Otherwise, I can't edit client work with it.

I'll do a test of that this week.

Also -- I'm looking for work with old computer skills. Learning the full suite now.
