Be careful speaking in front of your appliances

I may have made a slight mistake. Never think "Wow, this XXX has worked for YY years!"

Because then the next time you use it, something funky happens. My crock pot, which is old enough to have a graduate degree and leave home, made some lovely lamb bone broth for me in the last 24 hours. But I did notice a slighted burned odor. I thought this was the Shaman baking. He doesn't clean the house pizza stone until it's well done.

Not entirely.

Turns out the gelatin oozed up, lifted the lid a hair, and trickled over the lip of the pot and into the aluminum heating element, pooling down inside. Not a lot, which I mopped up. But you know how oil rubberizes when it is hit with more heat? And this is close to the heating element (enclosed, but there's a nut on top of it, forming that well.)

So...wondering if it is safe to use...as in starting a fire. They don't make them like this anymore, sadly, although I suppose I can let dough rise in the crock. I was thinking about a Consumer's Report online membership for research purposes. Might be time!

Before you get that CR Online membership, check to see whether your local public library offers it. And if they don't, check this:

Click the yellow ribbon that says "Articles & Information" and then the link that says "get a Temporary Research Access Code (TRAC)". This should allow you access to CR Online if you go through this page - scroll down a little and you'll see the link for CR.

Good to know, thank you!

warm water, rinse out the element, turn it over with an air gap and let it dry. those things are hella tough, made way back when.

I first thought this was about one of those Samsung smart TVs with voice recognition (http://www.cnet.com/how-to/samsung-smart-tv-spying/). :-)

I used to to the Consumer Reports thing but nowadays I mostly rely on Amazon reviews. They're free. If I remember, I check if the item is cheaper at Walmart.

If you're thinking of getting a new slow cooker, I really like that mine has a probe. It turns itself down to Warm when it reaches the right temperature. No pink chicken for me!

Turns out a screw in the bottom fell out who-knows-when ago, and it's doing fine. I think this was a JC Penneys one, of all things. I'll remember the probe trick--eventually I will want another one!

I have carefully scrubbed out the bottom under the stone crock, wiping out the soap etc. with paper towels. No more burning smell.

The library takes paper copies of CR, but does not have an on-line subscription. Alas.
