The ofrenda is early this year...
I've been quiet for both good and bad reasons. First I was quiet because I started a new book, something fun and different my subconscious insisted on, and I'm 80,000 words into it. Then I was quiet because the heat of an Arizona summer hammered me flat, and I was trying not to lose the ground I'd gained earlier in the year.
Then my mother's health plummeted. She rallied under the comfort of hospice, and we had two good weeks with her. One night there was a sea change, and in scant days she "went ahead."
My mother loved Allie, and for twenty-five years she used a tattered Hidden Fires bookmark when she read. Otherwise, you'll have to read the obit. Because she was old school. A lady appears in the papers only three times. She lived her life quietly and with grace, despite health challenges. I have loved her through many lifetimes, and know I will see her again.

SOUTH BEND - Longtime South Bend resident, Katharine Layman “Kitty” Schell Kimbriel, 84, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2016, in Leo-Cedarville, IN. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on January 15, 1932, she was the third of four daughters. Katharine Kimbriel graduated from Shortridge High School, attended Denison University in Granville, OH, and graduated from Butler University in Indianapolis, IN. Kitty Kimbriel was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, initiated at Beta Tau/Denison. She taught school briefly before marrying William Donald Kimbriel. After her husband completed his DDS, the growing family moved to South Bend, Indiana.
Kitty and Don Kimbriel raised three daughters in South Bend and enjoyed vacations on the shores of Lake Michigan, where they later built their summer retirement cottage. Mrs. Kimbriel was a Deacon of The First Presbyterian Church, South Bend, a member of the Service Guild, and a volunteer with many local charitable groups. She was a loving wife, mother, and homemaker who spent most of her life concentrating on her family. Kitty enjoyed playing bridge, reading, and travel, and had a flair for needlework and knitting. After her husband's retirement Kitty and Don rotated between their summer cottage and a home in Oro Valley, Arizona.
Surviving are her daughters, Katharine Eliska Kimbriel, Elizabeth Anne Kimbriel Stillwell and Karen Christine Kimbriel; her son-in-law, Gregory Scot Stillwell; her grandchildren, Danielle Elizabeth Stillwell and Christopher Scot Stillwell; her sister, Sue Ann Schell Henderson, and brother-in-law, Lawrence Mark Henderson; her brother-in-law, Robert Ferriday III, and his wife, Barbara; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, William Donald Kimbriel; her parents, James Layman Schell and Mary Katharine Turman Schell; her sisters, Mary Elizabeth Schell Herndon and Sarah Isabelle Schell Ferriday; and her brother-in-law, Richard Fleetwood Herndon.
Burial will be in Pentwater, Michigan, at an undisclosed date.
Memorials should be sent to the Pentwater Township Library, 402 East Park Street, Pentwater, MI 49449."
