I'm wired!

This is a test.

Welcome to Dragon naturally speaking. This is version 5.0, so I don't know how well it will work. [livejournal.com profile] silona gave the program to me to try out, but it does not like her name. I admit I've been avoiding using it because I did not want to admit that my hands were getting bad. Plus, my doctor suggested I continue working with my hands to keep them supple. I may continue to type my novels, but I thought this program might be very useful for e-mail and live journal.

I'm working in DragonPad right now. I remember hearing on a writing list that the program works better in DragonPad than in Word. I will experiment in Word, but only after I learn more of the commands.

I'm having a slight problem with my accent. I used to speak in Midwestern Continental, but obviously Texas regionalism has crept in. The program has difficulty recognizing "then" and "than". I need to learn how to use punctuation such as "quotes unquote" and parentheses (like this) because I like to use them.

Well, so far this weekend (the weekend began Friday afternoon) W. shoveled about four yards of compost and then went to dance class. I finished some Web work and then met Jeff of peopletype.com to discuss my test results. After my visit with Jeff I came home to rake compost for about an hour. Then W. returned from dance class, and we met M.W. for dinner. Our local hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant was closing at 10 PM, so we went to Hyde Park Grill. The salmon was very good, W. had a Kobe burger, and M. W. tried the lentil soup. We headed for Chez Zee for dessert. Raspberry chocolate truffle cheesecake, oh, my!

When we got home at midnight, it was still clear as a bell. I should mention that when we were heading for dinner, W. mentioned that there was a 50 percent chance of rain tonight. I told him that if I had known that, I would still be raking mulch.

You can see where this is going, can't you? By 8 AM, it was pouring. Fortunately, it stopped soon, and the rest of the compost heap did not wash away. We raked in the rest of the small piles before driving to Cooper's in Llano with M. W. and the Wilson family. Cooper's is one of the top five barbecue pits in Texas. The sirloin and sausage were good, the ribs were excellent and the brisket was exquisite. We'll definitely come back.

Since returning home, we have sampled chocolate and continued watering the compost. I ordered again from roadID.com while W. enjoyed the cartoon network. We took a break for a walk, and tested our new flashers. We were informed by other walkers that they could be seen from quite a distance. Excellent!

And now, I toy with Dragon recognition. I think it be useful, but I find it interesting that every time it makes a mistake, the correct answer is usually the second option.

I wonder how long it will take me to speak normally?

Dictated and hand corrected Saturday night. ("Ribs" was "Rhythms" and so on...) More mulch tomorrow.

Depending on how many hand corrections you needed to make, of course, it looks like you're doing pretty good.

I really, *really* tried, but I never could write fiction in Dragon; though it was more useful for email and business letters. I didn't bother to bring it over to this machine; the amount of typing I do in a day having fallen drastically since the departure of SFWA in all forms from my life.

I am not sanguine, but am going to try. There are things I'd like to post, about the career tests, or LBb, that involve enough typing to make me think twice about it. I figure using Dragon for that will loosen me up. But if saying "Open parenthese that Close parenthese" is going to break the rhythm totally, then it's not going to happen. Still, using it for letters, etc. might be a great rest.
