What makes your heart sing?

In honor of my birthday, my first meme:

What makes your heart sing? It's my meme, so I think I should lay ground rules. Let's not say individuals--it can be very true, but that's another meme. I am talking about this kind of thing--

You're up in the morning, you are sleep-deprived, you're trying to get moving before work, it's already in the 80s and heading for 3 digits, you are gathering up food and papers and suddenly, from the patio, a breath of wind stirs the wind chimes out there.

They sing to you--and your heart simply leaps to hear them, in the midst of everything else.

So, what makes your heart sing? Off the top of my head, three things:

Wind chimes when I don't expect them.

Light from stained or beveled glass.

Birdsong

the unexpected first sight of the moon in a clear dark sky

that first crash of a summer storm hitting (rain and thundercrack all at once)

the sleepy mrrrowr of a feline inquiring if you're up and if you'd like to pet them now.

All great ones, yes!

(And this tree, the first time I saw it in bloom...)

A slight detour--

I should add--I woke up to purring lumps and stained glass rainbows in the first year I was alone, and I think it saved my sanity.

Now, they seem to know I'm all right. They don't sleep with me anymore--elsewhere in the house, or in their heated basket that is on the bed by day and by the bed at night. Now, they bounce up after first light and ask about skritches...

Pandora saved my heart. Boomerang brought back my laughter.

(that's Boomer in my icon)

Yes--Max saved my heart, Merlyn made me laugh, and Meg watched over me...she was always there.

The only reason I think about getting a paid LJ account is to have easier icon switch-outs for my cats!

Happy Birthday!!

[identity profile] alfreda89.livejournal.com 2005-07-12 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, ma'am!

So--you gonna sing? 8^)

The perfect spring breeze, when the wind is just calling you, luring you outside. Also, strong wind and thunderstorms, but only if I don't want to go outside.

Irish traditional music.

Golden sunlight, when it feels like the world is made of silken gold.

And, hi. I followed a link to a link and found your journal. And happy birthday!

[identity profile] alfreda89.livejournal.com 2005-07-12 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I love your icon--I always have this feeling when I hit that point in the story!

Yes, these are all that way. When the moment finally comes that Alfreda realizes she loves Shaw, he'll be playing Billy Oskay's solo from "Bring Me Back A Song."

[identity profile] penmage.livejournal.com 2005-07-12 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I have always loved those lines. I suppose I should add to this list: A perfect moment in a story, when comes the crystallized joy of everything being right, or coming together, or resonating in your heart like bells. (Or horns, horns, horns, of course :).

[identity profile] janni.livejournal.com 2005-07-12 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Light off clouds or mountains.

Catching a hawk soaring.

Silence--not the surface kind, but the deeper kind that seeps into one's bones and reminds you all is well with the world

[identity profile] alfreda89.livejournal.com 2005-07-12 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes...

[identity profile] noiseinmyhead.livejournal.com 2005-07-12 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
rain on a tin roof
babies laughing
chris holding his children

[identity profile] alfreda89.livejournal.com 2005-07-12 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
All great, but the Chris one is a slight cheat. We need a heart singing people doing or being meme, too.

[identity profile] noiseinmyhead.livejournal.com 2005-07-12 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
make that any dad holding thier children ;)

You're in-- 8^)

Happy birthday!

What makes your heart sing?

The sound of rain

Snowflakes in the wind

Goldfinches in a three-dimensional brawl around the feeder

[identity profile] alfreda89.livejournal.com 2005-07-12 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

Goldfinches in a three-dimensional brawl around the feeder

::Grin::

Bluejays and chickadees having a holler-off in a hollowed pine....

grackels loud enough to drown out the freeway when you are right next to the freeway

[identity profile] alfreda89.livejournal.com 2005-07-13 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Now wait a minute--is this really something that makes your heart sing? That makes you laugh, or exasperates you, I'll buy--but sing?

I really was charmed by those silly chicks and blues--they ended up in an Allie book!

[identity profile] noiseinmyhead.livejournal.com 2005-07-13 12:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, the pacific NW may have lots of plant life but it has much quieter bird life and the grackles always remind me I am home.

Now Jays are DANGEROUS they keep dive bombing me! and not just int he spring.

Yes, she's serious...

I believe you. I even have a sneaking affection for them, myself--when in very small numbers. The sun hitting their feathers is dazzling.

Hippos and birdies!

Dragon weather -- when it's 105F and 5% humidity and there's a stiff afternoon wind like the mountains themselves are dragons breathing fire in your face.

The light of a desert sunset, purple and orange off clouds.

Frost on the cactus spines.

Full moon through pines.

I love them all...especially the moon through pines. I still love the Gwen Frostic notepaper with windswept pines and moons and sunsets best of all.

Hey, happy birthday!

As for the meme...

1. "End of day" time with the girls, all of us snuggled under a blanket, reading books to each other.

2. Sunlight on open water

---Ell

[identity profile] alfreda89.livejournal.com 2005-07-13 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

The first one is cheating a little, but I'll accept reading time with people who appreciate it as legit--infecting kids with books should happen anywhere, any time... 8^)

Happy Birthday!!

May there be many, many more, and all of them filled with joy and laughter.

There are so many things in life that make my heart sing, I could never possibly list them all.

This morning's then.

Early morning birdsong at sunrise.

The jingle of Princesses collar as she pounces on the bed, big open mouthed tongue swinging smile on her face, to let me know a wonderful new day has begun.

A well timed uplifting e-mail from my closest friend

The purr of my little green feathered fluff ball, Smitten, as he falls asleep in my arms.

The smell of the gardens, still laced with the morning's dew.

A snail speeding across the concrete walk, and Princess carefully manuevering around him.

A lady bug lighting on the rosebuds outside the front door.

[identity profile] alfreda89.livejournal.com 2005-07-13 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
I think, my friend, your are in the fast lane of heart singing! I wish you joy there!

[identity profile] zara-elis.livejournal.com 2005-07-13 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, it doesn't take much for me. Maybe I've just had a lot of years of practice looking for those little sparks of happy to balance out the darkness.

[identity profile] alfreda89.livejournal.com 2005-07-13 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes--it doesn't take a lot for me, either. I am blessed in my friends and my life--

Bright Blessings, m'dear!

[identity profile] clouds-loom.livejournal.com 2005-07-13 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Happy Birthday and many, many happy returns!

As for the meme:

The crunch of snow underfoot in a frozen, hushed, star-filled night.

A squirrel chattering at the languid cats asleep in the window.

The sound of an unexpected cloudburst in the middle of a drought.

The sputtering purr from a kitty falling asleep all snug in your arms as you're drifting off to sleep yourself.

The smell of gingerbread baking.

I like those, too!

I still love that kitten icon....

Thank you! You two were missed, and must appear another time!

Good meme!!!

the wind on my body when I'm out on a long bike ride

the first taste of a vanilla latte

hearing snatches of a favorite song in an unexpected place

Happy Birthday :)

[identity profile] alfreda89.livejournal.com 2005-07-14 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

We're getting some great ones, most I agree with--I think I need to make a list of them to post.

That moment at the top of a step in foxtrot where your breath catches in your throat.

That day when all of your tax forms arrive at your door and you can begin the process.

UPS or FedEx delivery truck visits.

Mornings where you get no red lights and no traffic.

74 MPH

Happy Birthday (or ya know a couple days after)

[identity profile] alfreda89.livejournal.com 2005-07-14 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
