A plea for sanity in Texas--
Oct. 22nd, 2005 02:18 pmA friend sent this to me yesterday. I felt it was worth publishing, and asked her permission. She felt it wasn't strong writing, having a lot of emotion in it, but I said that Prop. 2 is hanging out there like a poisoned fruit (so to speak) and anything honest that can be said to get people to the polls to vote is worth saying.
I apologize for not using a "cut", but Texans need to see this:
Why you should vote against Proposed Texas Amendment No.2
Dear friends,
After getting land-blasted for the ump-teenth time to vote in favor of proposed Texas amendment no. 2, I feel compelled to urge you to vote AGAINST it.
My brother is gay. He is a good, decent, and moral person. He contributes a lot to our community through volunteer activities, taxes, business and social interactions. He is no more wild and crazy than myself. Many gays are not the examples presented in the media, but lead otherwise conservative lives. I won't pretend to persuade someone's perspectives on the central issue of homosexuality...although I would enjoy debating the core theme of Sodom & Gomorrah, whether gay marriages prove any threat to other marriages, and other aspects. Instead, I merely urge anyone of those views to select a different tool than this to accomplish their goal of denying homosexuals the legal status of marriage. I plead from my heart you consider what I have to say:
Whether you choose to provide him the same LEGAL rights of marriage or not, this bill is written poorly. It denies ALL opportunity for him & others similar to things far beyond 'marriage': powers of attorney, living wills, and legal rights relating to hospital visitation, property and entitlement to proceeds of life insurance policies.
You may suggest that there are other means of providing these, but the manner in which this amendment is written, it denies the power of any legal tool enacting these WITHOUT the designation of marriage. It goes beyond merely denying them the label of marriage, or any similar relationship label. It denies them and many heterosexual common law couples the right to select who inherits items, and who can help them in a medical crisis should no blood kin be available.
My husband is an only child and our parents are elderly. Should anything happen to us, the children we are trying to have would be best served by going to my brother rather than a child care system that is notorious for abuse. The manner in which this amendment is written it would deny us this.
As my friends, you have always proven thoughtful people. I again urge you to consider your position on this particular amendment proposal. This one doesn't provide the protection of any rights, but denies many.
Early voting begins October 24th. Voting day is November 8th. Please make an appearance on this one.
Sincerely,
(HSC)
