STARDUST -- RECOMMENDED
Based on Neil Gaiman's story (he did not do the script, but he was co-producer) this was a simply feel-good sort of fairy tale, shuffled around in Gaiman's personal style, giving archetypes and tropes a workout to get where he wanted to end up.
If you like and read SF & Fantasy, ignore the reviewers complaining of "too hard to follow" and "too many characters". I had no trouble following this, and the rest of the viewers with me had the same response. I had a solid feeling for individuals, and even some of the spear carriers started to stand out.
Worth seeing more than once in the theater!
RATATOUILLE -- RECOMMENDED
THis animated tale of a common rat who dreams of great cooking, of improving the palate of his family, has many smiles and a hero to cheer for. I think children will like this, but parents may like it even more. Definitely worth giving up an afternoon for (local theaters are showing it only daytime by now.) Catch a matinee!
