alfreda89: (Tea -- the universal cure (ask the Docto)
Not to over-hype the movie, but it really is excellent. If you enjoy character studies, subtle emotions, occasional explosions, and pivot points in history, then this movie is for you. I would not mind seeing it again soon, if a friend wanted to go with someone. It's that good.

It's about the Duke of York, who became George VI of Great Britain when his older brother King Edward VII decided that he could not live without Wallis Simpson as his wife. She was a twice-divorced American, and the head of the Anglican Church could not marry a woman whose former husbands were still living. Since Edward turned out to be very impressed with Mr. Hitler, this was ultimately a good thing for Britain. But George (Bertie) had a terrible stutter. This is about how he conquered it, with the help of an unusual speech teacher. It's about overcoming life's biggest challenges, and friendship, and duty -- about the Real things.

Apparently the Queen was very touched by this story about her father and mother. Most people did not know this story. They should.

It really is like an anime, with all the tropes of the genre. Read my pitch for the live action movie Kamikaze Girls over at the BVC blog.

One thing I forgot to mention -- the movie is Japanese with subtitles, but the package is good enough that I was not bothered by the lack of English.

Well, I decided to post my Star Trek review over on the Book View Cafe blog. It can travel to Twitter, too -- we'll see how it handles a longer post.

Well, just for example, it was 91 today, with a heat index of 99. Gotta love that moisture. So -- go to a movie! Go to more than one!

STARDUST -- RECOMMENDED

Based on Neil Gaiman's story (he did not do the script, but he was co-producer) this was a simply feel-good sort of fairy tale, shuffled around in Gaiman's personal style, giving archetypes and tropes a workout to get where he wanted to end up.

If you like and read SF & Fantasy, ignore the reviewers complaining of "too hard to follow" and "too many characters". I had no trouble following this, and the rest of the viewers with me had the same response. I had a solid feeling for individuals, and even some of the spear carriers started to stand out.

Worth seeing more than once in the theater!

RATATOUILLE -- RECOMMENDED

THis animated tale of a common rat who dreams of great cooking, of improving the palate of his family, has many smiles and a hero to cheer for. I think children will like this, but parents may like it even more. Definitely worth giving up an afternoon for (local theaters are showing it only daytime by now.) Catch a matinee!
