Mercy Thompson: Homecoming (Mercedes Thompson, Prequel)Mercy Thompson: Homecoming by Patricia Briggs

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a story from before Moon Called, the first Mercy Thompson novel, but done in graphic form. It does show how Mercy met some important people in her life, became a mechanic instead of a teacher, and ended up in the Northwest. We see that Adam's pack came in to take care of a "werewolf problem" and that Mercy's talent for making good friends and bad enemies has been with her from the first.

The Dabel Brothers, who packaged this for Del Rey, chose a hard-edged, dark style to tell the story. Apparently there was a change in artists somewhere along the line. The designers decided to play with this, showing off the two styles on the front and back of the cover right up front. I don't know either artist, so I don't know which one, if either of them, does the next Briggs graphic novel, which I believe is Moon Called. There were things I liked about both artists, and they even managed to have a minimum of angles that would be considered pornographic if drawn correctly.

Worth checking out of your local library, if you love the novels and want to know all the stories. But my recommendation would be to flip through and see if you like the artwork before buying. The style will not please classic manga lovers, for example. But if you liked THE DARK KNIGHT? Probably right up your alley!
