alfreda89: 3 foot concrete Medieval style gargoyle with author's hand resting on its head. (Chai anime)
I was really hoping that this tee shirt, called 3037, would do well over at http://shirt.woot.com/. I was even thinking about getting it, as I have a very low number of shirts (heck, clothes) that actually fit right now. Losing a ton of weight does that for you. (Of course, the shirt I bought over at tee fury turned out to be a tiny bit too small, so I am now wearing it only around the place, too. Sigh. Between sizes as always.)

But -- $1200 bill for car repairs coming up.

Also....would this design look good on a woman with natural "huge tracts of land?" And then there's the question of whether the buildings are spelling out an obscenity. I don't think they are, but I don't want fans seeing me wearing the shirt to think that. Vulgarities are just not what I'd wear as a statement!

I hate being poor.

JaydiumJaydium by Deborah J. Ross

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Recommended. There is a special place in science fiction and fantasy for the “door in the wall” story. Sometimes it takes place on a completely different world; occasionally it takes place with alien minds front and center. In JAYDIUM, we have the repeating mirror of multiple times, the branching universe of “What if?” magnified and showing us different ways the universe has played out – and how one small world may be the home of a sentient alien species, the ruins of a once-great civilization, and a rock with a bonanza of energy wealth buried within it.
Some might say Here Be Spoilers )
As she did in Northlight, Ross examines betrayal, survival, healing, second chances, even redemption. There is a lot of adventure, a touch of romance, and new worlds and aliens to examine. The question of what is sentience, and could we recognize intelligence so different from ourselves, adds to the story. Fans of the Miller & Lee Liaden books, the Cherryh Atevi books, the Smith Idomeni books or my Nuala books will probably like this one, too.

I like Laura Anne Gilman's contemporary fantasies, and always look forward to them. I thought I'd already posted this review, but I can't find it, so here you go:

Pack of Lies (Paranormal Scene Investigations, #2)Pack of Lies by Laura Anne Gilman

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Pack of Lies is the second of the Paranormal Scene Investigations, as the publisher calls the urban fantasies about Bonita Torres, Talent (that’s a human magic-user to you) and now a PUPI, a Private Unaffiliated Paranormal Investigator. That unaffiliated part is important, because Bonnie, her team mates and two bosses are trying to create something that has never existed before – people who evaluate the Facts of a magic crime, taking no side.
Keep going )
If you enjoy the CSI style of story, if you like urban fantasy, if you like strong characterization, chances are you’ll like this book. Don’t read it as a straight romance (although a strong attraction is being fought in here) and don’t expect the crime to be tied up in a bow. Nothing is that simple in a Gilman novel, and her fans wouldn’t have it any other way.
